Subject description: This two year postdoctoral position is part of an international and interdisciplinary research project JUSTEMOTIONS; The Construction of Objectivity: An international perspective on the emotive-cognitive process of judicial decision-making. The project is financed by the European Research Council (ERC). The first year of the postdoctoral position will be spent collecting data in the US. Working with Professor Terry Maroney of Vanderbilt, the postdoc will collect data at state courts and prosecution offices of different levels (lower, appeal) and in different states. Travel costs are covered by the project. The position is full-time and includes benefits through Uppsala University (see link at bottom of this page about working for Uppsala University).

Work duties: The main duties involved in a post-doctoral position is to conduct research. The research work includes securing access and doing fieldwork in courts and prosecution offices in the US (the project already has key contacts in the field):
-communicating with a range of professionals at different levels
-transcription and coding of interviews, fieldnotes and documentary sources (using the Software NVivo)
-development of a shared coding scheme
-communication with project colleagues in Sweden, Italy, and Scotland via skype and at workshops in the participating countries
Requirements: For employment as postdoc, the applicant should have a PhD exam or an international equivalent within the field of Sociology or other for the position relevant fields, within a maximum of three (3) years before the final application date. During certain circumstances, an earlier PhD can be acceptable. Certain circumstances include leave due to illness, parental leave, in trade unions, etc.
The assessment of applications is based primarily on the applicant's ability to conduct independent research based on scientific skill. The applicant shall have documented knowledge in the relevant field of research (sociology of emotions and/or socio-legal studies). Experience of qualitative methods (interviews and observations) and evidence of excellent written and oral English (near native ability) as well as experience of doing research or working in legal settings, particularly in the USA. Consideration will also be given to good collaborative skills, drive and independence, and how the applicant’s experience and skills complement and strengthen the JUSTEMOTIONS research project.
