Uppsala universitet, Institutionen för kemi - Ångström

The Department of Chemistry - Ångström conducts research and education in the chemistry field. The department has more than 230 employees and has a turnover just over 220 million SEK. At the department's seven programs, we conduct very successful research of a high international standard. We have a large number of externally funded research projects, often with international cooperation and we see continued good growth in our subject area. The department has education assignments in engineering and civil engineering programs and master's programs.

Subject description: The Horizon 2020 FET OPEN project SoFiA ("Soap Film based Artificial Photosynthesis") mimics the thylakoid membrane in leaves and uses surfactant molecular dyes and catalysts made from earth abundant materials, to form self-assembled photo catalytic surfaces within designed soap foams. Coordinated by Prof. Leif Hammarström from Uppsala University, the interdisciplinary project features 8 partner institutions from 6 different countries. SoFiA started 1st January 2019 and will last 48 months.

Work duties: Experimental studies of artificial photosynthetic systems in solution, model membranes and soap films, primalily using time-resolved optical spectroscopy (fluorescence and transient absorption). This involves the photochemical and charge transfer reactions as well as investigations of the soap film structure and dynamics. Participation in SoFiA project, including workshops, collaborative scientific research with the other SoFiA partners, project planning and preparation of reports.

Requirements: For employment as postdoc, the applicant should have a PhD exam or an international equivalent within the field of Physical Chemistry or other for the position relevant fields, within a maximum of three (3) years before the final application date. During certain circumstances, an earlier PhD can be acceptable. Certain circumstances include leave due to illness, maternity leave, in trade unions, etc.

The assessment of applications is based primarily on the applicant's ability to conduct independent research based on scientific skill. Greater importance is attached to the quality of individual scientific work, than to the amount of publications. The applicant must be sufficiently fluent in English to understand, discuss and communicate science on a high level.

Consideration will also be given to good collaborative skills, drive, creativity and independence, and how the applicant’s experience and skills complement and strengthen ongoing research within the department, and how they stand to contribute to its future development.

Additional requirements:

  • Documented experience and competence in photochemistry, fluorescence spectroscopy (steady-state and time resolved) as well as transient absorption spectroscopy.

Uppsala University strives to be an inclusive workplace that promotes equal opportunities and attracts qualified candidates who can contribute to the University’s excellence and diversity. We welcome applications from all sections of the community and from people of all backgrounds.
