PhD student in industrial engineering and management with focus on social marketing - Hiring in process/Finished, not possible to apply

The Department of Engineering Sciences is one of the largest institutions at Uppsala University and conducts research within a number of different technical subjects. The department has approximately 360 employees and has its activities at the Ångström Laboratory and Campus Gotland.

Industrial engineering and management is a broad, interdisciplinary subject that covers several subareas ranging from organization and management, innovation and entrepreneurship as well as industrial and social marketing in technology and innovation intense businesses including automation and optimization to machine construction, production and production systems.

Duties/Project description: The PhD student is part of the interdisciplinary research group USER - Uppsala Smart Energy Research group. The studies are conducted as part of the research program ”Resistans och effekt – om smarta elnät för de många människorna” (Resistance and effect - on smart electricity grids for the many people) and is mainly funded by the Kamprad Family Foundation. Capacity shortage in electricity grids threatens to slow down societal development. An increase in demand side flexibility is considered to be part of the solution. The theoretical potential is known, but knowledge about electricity users’ awareness and acceptance in this context is scarce. Against this background the project aims to increase knowledge on electricity consumers’ and prosumers’ drivers and barriers for contributing with direct and indirect flexibility as well as on what role various policy instruments may play in this respect. The theoretical approaches stem from the disciplines social psychology and social marketing, whereas the empirical starting points consist of a number of collaborative projects between among others distribution system operators and municipalities.

Admission requirements: A person meets the general admission requirements for third-cycle courses and study programs if he or she:

• has been awarded a second-cycle qualification, or
• has satisfied the requirements for courses comprising at least 240 credits of which at least 60 credits were awarded in the second cycle, or
• has acquired substantially equivalent knowledge in some other way in Sweden or abroad. 

Requirements: We are looking for candidates with a masster’s degree in engineering focusing on for example ” Sociotechnical Systems Engineering” and applicants with a master’s degree in humanities and social sciences focusing on for example business administration or psychology. Good ability to cooperate and express oneself both orally and in writing in Swedish and in particular English is required.

Additional qualifications: Solid knowledge of residential electricity consumption, the electricity market and its operators' respective activities and the challenges that the conversion of the energy system entails are providing useful qualifications. So is a broad knowledge of various scientific approaches, previous experiences of statistical analyzes and an interest in issues relating to the energy system that are of an interdisciplinary character.
