The Department of Medical Biochemistry and Microbiology (IMBIM) at Uppsala University constitutes a broad and international research and teaching environment with focus on three principal domains: Biochemistry and Molecular Cell Biology, Genomics, and Microbiology and Immunology.

Description of Subject Area: The general subject area is medical bacteriology and could include research on, for example, antibiotic resistance, antibacterial agents, host-bacterial interactions, bacterial genetics or genomics of relevance for infections or resistance against antibacterial agents.

Duties: The successful candidate is expected to perform research, teaching and administration in the area of medical bacteriology. Supervision of undergraduate, graduate and postdocs and responsibility for developing and performing educational courses at the basic, advanced pre-doctoral and at the doctoral level. Teaching duties could be up to 50% of the position. It is also expected that the candidate will actively follow and develop leadership in the evolution of the research area and the relevant societal development. Finally, leadership or administrative duties are included and both internal and external commissions of trust are anticipated as part of the normal senior lectureship activities.

Eligibility: Eligible to be employed as senior lecturer is, according to the Higher Education Ordinance, the person who has a doctoral degree or equivalent academic competence and has shown scientific as well as teaching skills. The pedagogical skills and scientific competence have to be relevant for the position and the duties associated with it.

Teaching competence requires that the applicant has undergone relevant education on teacher training at the University level, comprising at least ten weeks or has gained equivalent knowledge. The education on teacher training can, under certain circumstances, be completed during the first two years of employment. Furthermore, according to the Appointment Regulations for Uppsala University, the applicant must have the personal characteristics required to perform the duties of the post well.

The applicant must have documented competence in teaching both in Swedish and English. If special circumstances exist, a person who cannot teach in Swedish, is expected to obtain this capability within two years.

Assessment criteria: In the selection of eligible applicants, equal importance will be placed on research and teaching competence but special emphasis will be placed on scientific skills. The assessment criteria will however be co-weighted such that an applicant assessed as having much greater teaching expertise than an applicant who has slightly greater research expertise may be ranked ahead of the latter. Research expertise comprises research merits, including merits obtained in the professional sphere, which comprise for example technological development and capacity to innovate.

In assessing scientific expertise, special importance will be placed on merits obtained in the research areas of infection or antibiotics and the extent to which this orientation fits within the Department. In assessing research expertise research quality must be the prime consideration. The scope of research, primarily in regard to depth and breadth, must also be afforded consideration. Furthermore, consideration must be given to the capacity to plan, initiate, lead and develop research and education in the third cycle, the ability to acquire funding for research in competition, as well as the demonstrated capacity to interact with others both within academia and in the wider community.

Teaching expertise comprises educational and teaching qualifications. Teaching expertise may have been achieved in the professional sphere through tutorship, supervision of interns, mentorship programs et al. In assessing teaching competence, the quality of teaching shall be given primary consideration. The scope, in terms of both breadth and depth, will also be considered. Furthermore, consideration must be given to the capacity to plan, initiate, lead, and develop teaching and instruction, as well as the ability to connect research to teaching with respect to research in the subject at hand, subject didactics, as well as teaching and learning in higher education. The ability to interact concerning issues of teaching and learning in higher education with actors inside and outside the University is also included in teaching expertise.

Administrative expertise is of importance to the position, and will be assigned weight. Administrative expertise also includes entrepeneurship. Administrative expertise is demonstrated, for example, through the capacity to plan, organise and prioritise work in an efficient and task-related manner, as well as through the ability to assign and observe time frames. Expertise includes overall operational planning and the capacity to manage resources in a way that reflects operational priorities, as well as the ability to work in a structured manner based with an awareness of goals and quality.

Leadership expertise is of importance to the position, and will be assigned some weight. Leadership expertise is demonstrated through the ability to lead operations and employees, make decisions, assume responsibility and motivate and provide others with the conditions necessary to attain common goals. The ability to coordinate the group and contribute to generating commitment, participation and job satisfaction and the ability to manage conflicts are further examples of demonstrated expertise. All merits must be documented so that both quality and quantity can be evaluated.

In appointing a person to this academic post, priority will be given to the applicant who, after a holistic qualitative assessment of competence and skills, is judged, alongside documented qualifications, to possess the greatest potential for performing and further developing the relevant duties and contribute to the positive development of the working environment.

All merits need to be documented such that both quality and quantity can be properly assessed. Personal conditions, such as part-time work due to, for example, parental leave, trades union duties, military service, etc., that in the assessment may be credited to the applicant should be stated in the application.
