Uppsala University, Department of Earth Sciences - GEOPHYSICS/SNSN

The Department of Earth Sciences is one of the most complete such academic departments in Europe. Our research focuses on subjects that range from the Earth’s core to the atmosphere, on scales from submicroscopic structures in minerals to the formation of mountains and oceans. We have teaching at undergraduate and graduate levels. Our courses offer a wide range within the geoscience area and several of the department's programs have received the highest rating in evaluations by the Swedish National Agency for Higher Education (Högskoleverket) and the Swedish Higher Education Authority (Universitetskanslersämbetet). For more information, please visit: www.geo.uu.se or www.facebook.com/geouppsalauniversity/.

The Geophysics unit at the Department of Earth Sciences consists of about 50 personnel, including about 20 PhD students. The Geophysics program is currently running projects involving studies of major crustal structures of the Baltic Shield, urban geophysics, novel geophysical solutions (hardware and software) for deep mineral exploration, geological storage, scientific drilling, earthquake seismology, development of instruments, time-series processing and numerical modelling methods for electromagnetic data applied to near-surface and deep crustal-scale studies. The geophysics program runs its own ~ 600-channel (cabled and 1C/3C wireless) seismic system, a state-of-the-art 120-3C seismic landstreamer acquisition system, and develops and uses modern processing and imaging algorithms. It is also well equipped with a suite of other geophysical instrumentation, including electromagnetic instruments (e.g. 11 magnetotelluric stations), modern downhole logging equipment, gravimeters etc. The program also operates the Swedish National Seismic Network (SNSN), consisting of 68 permanent broadband stations, and has an extensive equipment pool for passive seismic field studies. Further information about the program and the department can be found at www.geo.uu.se/research/geophysics/.

Duties: Research Engineer at the Geophysics program. Maintenance, testing and calibration of field instruments for seismological, electromagnetic and other geophysical measurements, as well as laboratory instruments for rock physics measurements. Participate in development of instrumentation and measurement systems for geophysical applications. Participate in geophysical field work, both shorter maintenance visits to seismic stations and longer field campaigns for geophysical data acquisition. The successful applicant will spend some periods in the field in Sweden and abroad, up to about ten weeks per year in total.

Requirements: Minimum of a masters degree or equivalent in electrical engineering or geophysics. Experience with maintenance and testing of electronic and mechanical measurement systems, as well as experience with field measurements over longer periods of time. A Swedish drivers license class B is required. Proficiency in spoken and written Swedish and English.
