Duties
The position includes teaching, examining, research and administration. Being responsible for and administering courses, and supervising students, also count as teaching. Actively applying for external research funds and following development in one’s own subject area, and in general society’s development with a bearing on the teacher’s work at the University, are additional obligations. The teaching will be part of the Law Programme, and of other courses including the one-year Master Programme in International Investment Treaty Arbitration (see http://www.uu.se/en/admissions/master/selma/program/?pKod=JIS2N&pInr=&lasar=19/20).
Eligibility requirements
For eligibility to be appointed as Senior Lecturer, the applicant must have a PhD or have attained a corresponding level of research proficiency; have demonstrated teaching expertise; and possess the personal characteristics required to meet the demands of the position well. One requirement for teaching expertise to be deemed to exist is for the applicant to have completed at least ten weeks’ teacher training for higher education that is relevant for the work, or be judged to have corresponding knowledge. The academic teacher training may be implemented during the appointee’s first two years of employment, if there are special reasons.
Eligibility requires the ability to teach in Swedish and English. A person who, at the beginning of the appointment, is proficient in English only must be able to teach in Swedish as well within two years at the most.
The person offered this appointment as Senior Lecturer may be appointed as Professor instead if (s)he so requests in the application and is eligible for such an appointment.
Assessment criteria
In selection among eligible applicants, equal weight will be attached to teaching and research expertise.
In assessment of research expertise, scholarly quality will be the primary consideration. The scope of the applicant’s research, especially in terms of its breadth and depth, is also regarded as important. In addition, weight is assigned to ability to plan, initiate, lead and develop research and education at research (third-cycle) level; ability to obtain research funding in competition; and demonstrated ability to interact both within the academic discipline and with the community at large.
The applicant’s teaching expertise must be well documented so that its quality, too, can be assessed. In assessment of teaching expertise, quality of teaching will be the primary consideration. The extent of the applicant’s experience, in terms of both breadth and depth, will be given weight. The same is true of his or her ability to plan, initiate, lead and develop education and teaching, and also ability to connect the teaching with research. Teaching expertise also includes the ability to interact with stakeholders inside and outside the University regarding issues of teaching in higher education.
When the University appoints new teachers, the applicants selected must be those who, following a qualitative holistic assessment of their expertise and skill, are judged to have the best potential to carry out and develop the relevant duties, and also to make positive contributions to activities. Since the teaching is largely conducted in teacher teams, ability to collaborate well with colleagues is of substantial importance.
Assessment criterion of other expertise
Expertise in both administration and management is important for the appointment and will carry weight. These kinds of expertise are demonstrated in a capacity for operational planning, skill in leading activities and staff, and an ability to work well with others.
Personal circumstances (such as parental leave) that may be credited to the applicant in the valuation of qualifications should be specified in connection with the applicant’s account of qualifications and experience.
Uppsala University values the qualities that equal gender distribution and diversity bring to its activities. We would therefore like to see applicants of all genders and with varied birth background, functional capacity and life experience.
