A one-year position as a researcher in Palaeozoic vertebrate palaeontology is available at the Department of Organismal Biology, Evolutionary Biology Centre, Uppsala University. The planned starting date for the position is 01-05-2019. Evolutionary and palaeobiological research within the institution focuses on early vertebrates, early mammals and dinosaurs.

Project description: The researcher will study an extensive material of fossil bones from Devonian (385 million year old) deposits on Valentia Island in south-west Ireland. Methods of study will include mechanical prepration and tomography. The bones will be identified anatomically and taxonomically, described, figured, and used as a basis for reconstructing the faunal composition. In collaboration with other members of the Valentia Island project the researcher will present the results in peer-reviewed and popular scientific publications.

The bones appear to principally represent so-called placoderms; research expertise on this group of early vertebrates is thus essential to allow the researcher to carry out the project.

Duties: Carry out palaeontological research using standard techniques such as mechanical preparation, as well as tomographic scanning and modelling. Writing up the results as papers for peer-reviewed publications.

Requirements: PhD in palaeontology or a similar subject. Broad, in-depth research experience on placoderms. Fluency in English.

Additional qualifications: Experience of tomographic modelling is desireable.
