Uppsala University, Department of Earth Sciences

The Department of Earth Sciences is one of the most complete such academic departments in Europe. Our research focuses on subjects that range from the Earth’s core to the atmosphere, on scales from submicroscopic structures in minerals to the formation of mountains and oceans. We have teaching at undergraduate and graduate levels. Our courses offer a wide range within the geoscience area and several of the department's programs have received the highest rating in evaluations by the Swedish National Agency for Higher Education (Högskoleverket) and the Swedish Higher Education Authority (Universitetskanslersämbetet). Project/duties:
The emplacement of magma in the Earth’s shallow crust is a process that has important implications for, for example, heat transport, the formation of ore deposits, and volcanic hazards. Fracture mechanics and host rock properties are studied to understand the mechanics of magma emplacement. Recent advances in the understanding of how magma propagates in the upper crust suggest that the rheology of the surrounding host rock exerts a major control on the mechanism of intrusion emplacement. Another, yet less explored, parameter controlling magma emplacement appears to be magma rheology, which may result in different intrusion mechanisms and shapes and associated surface deformation.

This project involves working with existing data from structural measurements, petrological analyses and 3D modelling. Teaching, at 10% of working hours, is a part of the position.

Requirements:
