Uppsala University, Department of Earth Sciences - LUVAL

The Department of Earth Sciences is one of the most complete such academic departments in Europe. Our research focuses on subjects that range from the Earth’s core to the atmosphere, on scales from submicroscopic structures in minerals to the formation of mountains and oceans. We have teaching at undergraduate and graduate levels. Our courses offer a wide range within the geoscience area and several of the department's programs have received the highest rating in evaluations by the Swedish National Agency for Higher Education (Högskoleverket) and the Swedish Higher Education Authority (Universitetskanslersämbetet). For more information, please visit: www.geo.uu.se or www.facebook.com/geouppsalauniversity/.

The Programme for Air, Water, and Landscape Science (LUVAL) encompasses education and research in meteorology, hydrology, environmental analysis, and physical geography. The research in Physical Geography focuses on cryospheric sciences and climate change on the Quaternary / Anthropocene timeline. More information of the research group Ice, Climate and Environment (ICE) is found at: www.geo.uu.se/research/luval/disciplines/Physical-Geography/ongoing-research/.

The successful applicant will act as a mentor for the project members and such transfer the background of the field as well as specialist technological knowledge necessary to use optical, active and passive micro wave data to determine the snow water value in high resolution.

Qualifications:
PhD in Applied Mathematics or related disciplines with remote sensing in focus. The applicant must be proficient in spoken and written English. The successful candidate should have deep knowledge of writing algorithms to process raw data from satellite borne microwave and optical sensors, to have an extensive record of experience with synergy in creating snow water equivalents from satellite borne optical and microwave data, and have knowledge in hydrological modeling. Knowledge and experience in remote sensing of snow using different satellite sensors including high resolution.

Additional qualifications:
Expertise in retrieval of physical snow properties is considered as a merit.
