The Department of Earth Sciences at Uppsala University is one of the largest and scientifically broadest Earth Science Department in Sweden and includes research programmes in Mineralogy, Petrology and Tectonics, Geophysics, Palaeobiology, Hydrogeology, Meteorology and Natural Resource Science.

The Geophysics Program: Seismic methods provide high-resolution images of the Earth's interior. The acquired data contain geometrical information on geological structure and on the physical properties of the materials that the seismic waves have propagated through. The Geophysics Program is currently running projects involving studies of major crustal structures of the Baltic Shield, urban geophysics, geological storage of CO2, mineral exploration and geological modeling of major mineral belts, geohazards, development of electromagnetic and seismic instruments and methods for shallow and deep crustal studies. Research focus in the applied geophysics part is on (1) structural interpretation of reflection seismic and electromagnetic data based on conventional and advanced processing/modeling methods, (2) monitoring CO2 geological storage sites, (3) developing novel processing/modeling methods for hardrock conditions, (4) multi-disciplinary near-surface studies in both urban and noisy areas, (5) physical property and borehole geophysics studies and (6) integrating results from the field data with other geophysical and geological data. The geophysics program runs its own ~ 550-channel (cabled and 1C/3C wireless), a state-of-the-art 100-3C seismic landstreamer acquisition system, and uses modern processing and imaging software. Duties: The PhD candidate will conduct research within the field of seismic method development, both acquisition and processing. Goals will be to develop methods that will facilitate the use of active-passive seismic data in the research focus areas outlined above. The candidate will therefore interact closely with other researchers and PhD students in their particular projects.

Requirements: We are seeking a motivated candidate with strong interest in research who has an academic magister/master- or engineering degree, or equivalent, in geophysics, physics, earth sciences or a similar field (formally, four years of university study including a minimum of 1 year at advanced level are required). Linux/Unix and programming skills; experience and knowledge on seismic data acquisition and processing are necessary. Knowledge of Seismic Unix and shell scripts is a merit. Good oral and written proficiency in English is required. The research will include significant fieldwork and the candidate should be willing to spend time outdoors for data collection; a driving license is required.

Employment conditions: The position is full-time for four years and may include up to 20% of research or teaching assistantship, extending the position to 5 years.
