Uppsala University, Department of Neuroscience

The research performed at the department of Neuroscience covers the normal function of the nervous system, its development as well as how function of the nervous system is altered following injury and in disease, and how to improve treatment of patients with these disorders. In addition, studies are carried out on genetic and acquired factors that can give rise to or contribute to nervous system disorders and underlie personality disorders (e.g. drug abuse, criminality).

Project Description: We are interested in mechanisms of how immune system imbalance leads to psychiatric disease. Our group focuses on patients with atypical presentation of psychiatric symptoms in conjunction with infections, autoimmune co-morbidity, serum and CSF samples will be screened for novel autoimmune targets.

In collaboration the Autoimmunity profiling facility and Affinity Proteomics Unit at KTH Royal Institute of Technology SciLifeLab, we will perform a very extensive and unbiased screening utilizing our established affinity proteomics platform.

Identification of a disease-associated autoantibody opens up possibilities both in terms of diagnosis and treatment. Our major interest lies both in identifying clinically relevant biomarkers and in the understanding of the processes that lead to autoimmune diseases with psychiatric manifestations. To study these processes, we use a translational approach, combining the analysis of cell lines, human samples and the use of experimental model systems by various immunological and molecular biology state-of-the-art techniques.

Work description: We are looking for a highly motivated postdoctoral researcher to join our team. He/she will be investigating the markers of autoimmunity and the interplay of autoimmunantibodies against targets in the central nervous system and their relation to psychiatric symptoms. The position may also involve oversight/supervision of technicians and/or undergraduate and graduate students. Max 20 % teaching.

Qualifications: To qualify for an employment as a post-doctor, the applicant must hold a doctor’s degree or a foreign qualification deemed equivalent to a doctorate. To be eligible for a position as postdoctoral researcher the applicant's Ph.D. degree must have been obtained no more than three years prior to the application date; however, for example periods of sick leave or parental leave are deducted from the three-year period.

Criteria for ranking:

• A strong track record and excellent technical skills.
• Specialized in high throughput affinity proteomics-based methods including suspension bead arrays and planar array formats using antibodies and protein fragments, expeierience with Luminex instruments
• Experience in the field of psychoimmunology
• Experience in standard molecular biology tools such as Western Blots, Immunoprecipitation, and Protein Purification, Cell culture work including cultivation and transfection of cells, basic work with mass spectrometry and protein quantification
• Excellent communication, teamwork and interpersonal skills and fluency in written and spoken English.
