The Department of Engineering Sciences is one of the largest institutions at Uppsala University and conducts research within a number of different technical subjects. The department has approximately 360 employees and has its activities at the Ångström Laboratory and Campus Gotland. The position is in the subject Engineering Sciences with specialization in Solid State Physics, Division of Solid State Physics, at the Ångström Laboratory.
The Magnetism group within the Division of Solid State Physics deals with the experimental studies of magnetic materials, and consists of professors, guest scientists, postdocs and PhD students, in total some twenty active researchers.
Project description: There is an ever growing demand for functional materials to build novel or optimized applications and devices, yielding worldwide fundamental and applied research efforts. A new route dealing with a striking class of materials, so-called quasicrystals, is being considered. The announced position is tied to the project: “Functional Quasicrystals? ”Harnessing the complexity of aperiodic intermetallic compounds” (FuncQC) supported by the Knut and Alice Wallenberg Foundation. The project deals with the design, synthesis, structural, and physical characterization (e.g. electronic, magnetic properties) of quasicrystals, and the tuning of their properties. The successful candidate will be more particularly involved in the magnetic characterization of novel quasicrystal approximants and quasicrystals. Magnetic and electrical experiments will also be performed under high pressures.
The project activities will be carried out in close collaboration with the Departments of Chemistry and Geosciences from Uppsala University, as well as co-workers from Stockholm University and KTH (see the webpage of the FuncQC project: http://www.funcqc.se).
Duties: The main duties of doctoral students are to devote themselves to their research studies which includes participating in research projects and third cycle courses. The work duties can also include teaching and other departmental duties (no more than 20%).
Admission requirements: A person meets the general admission requirements for third-cycle courses and study programs if he or she:
