Uppsala University, Department of Physics and Astronomy

The Department of Physics and Astronomy at Uppsala University invites applications for a postdoctoral position in ion physics, to work mostly within in-situ characterization of ultra-thin film systems of high relevance for e.g. electronics and sensors with focus on transition metals, their silicides and germanides as well as oxides. Changes in properties of relevance for the performance of the materials such as crystallinity and chemical composition are to be studied while the system is exposed to various different conditions such as heating. The postdoctoral fellow is expected to put a focus on the recently acquired TOF-LEIS (Time-of-Flight Low-Energy Ion Scattering) system, featuring a non-destructive approach for depth profiling ultra-thin films. The project will deal with deposition of ultra-thin films, thin film characterization, method development in ion-scattering and development of data analysis methods but also has aspects within fundamental ion-solid interaction. The successful applicant is also expected to contribute to applied and interdisciplinary research with a focus on materials. Taking over responsibilities in collaboration projects with industry is possible.

Contributions to and new initiatives in method development at the main experimental facilities, i.e. the 5 MV tandem accelerator, the 350 kV implanter with associated ToF-MEIS system and a newly installed Low-Energy ion scattering system (LEIS) will comprise a part of the working duties.

Supervision of undergraduate and PhD-student projects can be part of the working duties.

Prerequisites: The holder of a position as researcher must have a PhD degree or equivalent. Well-documented research experience using ion beams for material research, fundamental studies or materials modifications is expected. A good fundamental understanding of ion-solid interaction is required. Experience in thin film technology is considered to be of advantage.

Employment Period: The period of employment is 2 years.

Starting date: 20190401 or Upon agreement

The application should contain a letter describing the applicant and her/his qualifications and research interests. It should also contain a CV, copies of relevant degrees, contact information for at least two reference persons, and a full publication list. Personal circumstances that may be of relevance in the evaluation, for example periods of parental leave, should be mentioned in the CV.

Uppsala University strives to be an inclusive workplace that promotes equal opportunities and attracts qualified candidates who can contribute to the University’s excellence and diversity. We welcome applications from all sections of the community and from people of all backgrounds. The department strives for a more even gender balance in its research and teaching staff. Thus, female applicants are especially encouraged. Sweden has a generous welfare system that includes paid parental leave, affordable daycare and practically free medical care.

Salary: Individually negotiated salary.

Type of position: Temporary part-time position (100%) ending 31-03-2021.
