Uppsala University, Department of Cell and Molecular Biology

The position is at the department of Cell and Molecular Biology (ICM) at Uppsala university. We are divided into seven research programs with specializations in the following areas: Computational Biology and Bioinformatics, Microbiology, Molecular Biology, Molecular Biophysics, Molecular Evolution, Molecular Systems Biology and Structure Biology. The department has more than 200 employees and about 70 PhD students. Please read more about ICM at http://www.icm.uu.se.

The position is available in the research group of Siv Andersson (https://www.icm.uu.se/molekylar-evolution/andersson-siv/) at the program of Molecular Evolution.

Project description

The research in Siv Andersson´s team aims to understand the forces and mechanisms that drive evolution at the molecular level. The focus of this project is on the Planctomycetes, which are prokaryotic cells that resembles eukaryotic cells. The Planctomycetes are unique among bacteria in that they have intracellular membrane structures, divide by budding and can import proteins and other large molecules. Their genomes are larger and far more complex than other bacterial genomes. Evolutionary studies of the genomes and proteomes of the Planctomycetes may provide knowledge about the evolution of cellular complexity.

Work description

The project is on advanced bioinformatics and statistical analyses of DNA- and protein-data, with a specific focus on data obtained in-house from the Planctomycetes. Large-scale comparative studies including publicly available data from prokaryotes and eukaryotes will be an important part of the project. The work will also include the development and implementation of new bioinformatic methods and tools. Teaching (up to maximally 20% of the time) may be included if there are such needs within the program.

Qualifications

We seek a highly motivated person with a PhD exam and postdoc experience in bioinformatics, molecular evolution or related subject areas. Skills in software development and comparative genomics are beneficial. The successful candidate should have strong collaborative skills but also be able to work independently. High requirements on research quality and ethics, including quality and reproducibility of data and analyses, are central for all work in the group.

Application

Your application should contain the following:

1) CV 2) letter of motivation describing research interests, knowledge and why you are interested in this position (max 2 pages) 3) list of publications 4) PhD exam 5) up to three letters of recommendation
