Uppsala University, Department of Cell and Molecular Biology

The position is at the department of Cell and Molecular Biology (ICM) at Uppsala university. We are divided into seven research programs with specializations in the following areas: Computational Biology and Bioinformatics, Microbiology, Molecular Biology, Molecular Biophysics, Molecular Evolution, Molecular Systems Biology and Structure Biology. The department has more than 200 employees and about 70 PhD students. Please read more about ICM at http://www.icm.uu.se.

The position is available in the research group of Siv Andersson (https://www.icm.uu.se/molekylar-evolution/andersson-siv/) at the program of Molecular Evolution.

Project description

The research in Siv Andersson´s group aims to provide a deeper understanding of the forces and mechanisms that drive evolution at the molecular level. The research group studies for example intracellular bacteria that are commonly present in the blood of animals and may cause disease in humans. The goal of this project is to characterize and understand how the bacterial genome evolves in a population that is restricted in its growth habitat by the host animal. Bartonella that live in the blood of mice and Lactobacillus that live in the honey stomachs of bees will be used as model organisms for this Project.

Work description

The project includes large-scale bioinformatic analyses of DNA- and protein-data, with a specific focus on genomic data from Bartonella and/or Lactobacillus. The development and implementation of bioinformatic tools may be included in the position. Teaching (up to maximally 20 % of the time) may be included if there are such needs within the program.

Qualifications

We seek a highly motivated person with a PhD exam in biology with specialization in molecular evolution, bioinformatics or related subject areas that the employer considers equivalent. The successful candidate should have strong collaborative skills but also be able to work independently. High requirements on research quality and ethics, including quality and reproducibility of data and analyses, are central for all work in the group.

To be employed as postdoctor at Uppala University your PhD exam should have been obtained within a three-year period prior to the deadline for applications to the position.

Additional merits

Prior experience of bioinformatic studies of microbial genomes is regarded as a merit.

Application

Your application should contain the following:

1) CV 2) letter of motivation describing research interests, knowledge and why you are interested in this position (max 2 pages) 3) list of publications 4) PhD exam 5) up to three letters of recommendation
