Uppsala universitet, Department of Earth Sciences - GEOPHYSICS

In the event of any disagreement between the English and the Swedish versions of this announcement, the Swedish version takes precedence.

The Department of Earth Sciences is one of the most complete such academic departments in Europe. Our research focuses on subjects that range from the Earth’s core to the atmosphere, on scales from submicroscopic structures in minerals to the formation of mountains and oceans. We have teaching at undergraduate and graduate levels. Our courses offer a wide range within the geoscience area and several of the department's programs have received the highest rating in evaluations by the Swedish National Agency for Higher Education (Högskoleverket) and the Swedish Higher Education Authority (Universitetskanslersämbetet). For more information, please visit: www.geo.uu.se or www.facebook.com/geouppsalauniversity/.

The Geophysics unit at the Department of Earth Sciences consists of about 50 personnel, including about 20 PhD students. The Geophysics program is currently running projects involving studies of major crustal structures of the Baltic Shield, urban geophysics, novel geophysical solutions (hardware and software) for deep mineral exploration, geological storage, scientific drilling, earthquake seismology, development of instruments, time-series processing and numerical modelling methods for electromagnetic data applied to near-surface and deep crustal-scale studies. The geophysics program runs its own ~ 600-channel (cabled and 1C/3C wireless) seismic system, a state-of-the-art 120-3C seismic landstreamer acquisition system, and develops and uses modern processing and imaging algorithms. It is also well equipped with a suite of other geophysical instrumentation, including electromagnetic instruments (e.g. 11 magnetotelluric stations), modern downhole logging equipment, gravimeters etc. The program also runs the Swedish National Seismic Network (SNSN), consisting of about 70 permanent broadband stations, and has an extensive equipment pool for passive field studies. Further information about the program and the department can be found at: www.geo.uu.se/research/geophysics/

This position is not tied to a predefined, externally financed, research project, thus applications in any area of applied geophysics are welcomed. Clearly, it will be advantageous if the research direction fits well into the ongoing activities, as highlighted above. We envisage that the successful candidate will work together with colleagues in Uppsala and elsewhere, contributing also in field activities.
