Uppsala universitet, Institutionen för informationsteknologi

The Department of Information Technology (www.it.uu.se) holds a leading position in research as well as teaching at all levels. The department has about 200 employees, including 80 senior faculty and 80 PhD students. More than 3000 students are enrolled annually.

Description of the subject area/duties: This project will focus on how we can coordinate information and action between hardware and software to optimize performance and energy efficiency in the memory system. To accomplish this, we will expend significant on-chip area for tracking metadata from runtime behavior and static compilation analysis, and use a combination of online and off-line learning approaches to adapt to application behavior and requirements. This project will investigate both traditional (CPUs with SRAM and DRAM) and heterogeneous (CPU and GPU) systems, and the use of with hybrid memory hierarchies (SRAM, DRAM, and NVRAM). We expect that the successful candidate will tailor the specifics of the direction based on her or his own interests and expertise, but will work with and extend the memory system technologies pioneered the computer architecture group (Tagless caches, Direct-to-Master caches, Reuse Aware Placement, etc.). The successful candidate will be expected to take an active role in advising PhD students. More information on the group can be found at: http://www.it.uu.se/research/uart.

The position is for two years and may include teaching (in English or Swedish) depending on availability and your career interests.

Requirements:

Candidates should have a Doctoral Degree (PhD or equivalent) in Computer Science, Computer Engineering, or equivalent at most three years before the application deadline (this time will be extended for medical leave, parental leave, etc.). Candidates should have expertise in memory system design and knowledge of at least one of the following: graphics, machine learning, compilers, or DRAM caches.  The candidate must clearly document a high degree of self-motivation in the application. In addition, the applicant must be able to work well in a diverse group, comfortable giving and receiving constructive criticism, and have strong abilities for critical thinking and structured work. These competencies are as important as the technical qualifications.

Excellent skills in spoken and written English are required.

Additional qualifications:

A strong background in any of the following areas is highly desirable: software-hardware co-design (conveying high-level information from compiler to hardware), micro-architectural design and simulation of processor and memory systems, evaluation and modeling of power.

Working in Sweden:

Sweden is a fantastic place for living and working. Swedes are friendly and speak excellent English. The quality of life is high, with a strong emphasis on outdoor activities. The Swedish working climate emphasizes an open atmosphere, with active discussions involving both junior and senior staff. Healthcare is free after a small co-pay and the university subsidizes athletic costs, such as a gym membership. The parental benefits in Sweden are among the best in the world, including extensive parental leave (for both parents), paid time off to care for sick children, and affordable daycare.

Application:

The application must include a statement (at most 2 pages) of the applicant’s motivation for applying for this position, including the candidate’s research interests and how they will support this project, a description of PhD thesis, and evidence of self-motivation and constructive teamwork. The application must include a CV, degrees and grades (translated to English or Swedish), a copy of the PhD thesis, publications (and specific descriptions of the candidate’s own contributions), other relevant documents, and the earliest possible starting date. At least one letter of recommendation and contact information for references should be provided directly by the references to Prof. Black-Schaffer.

Uppsala University strives to be an inclusive workplace that promotes equal opportunities and attracts qualified candidates who can contribute to the University’s excellence and diversity. We welcome applications from all sections of the community and from people of all backgrounds.
