Uppsala University, Department of Medicinal Chemistry

The Science for Life Laboratory (SciLifeLab) is a collaboration between four universities in Stockholm and Uppsala: Stockholm University, the Karolinska Institute, the Royal Institute of Technology, and Uppsala University. The SciLifeLab is a national centre for large-scale biosciences with a focus on health and environmental research. The centre combines advanced technical know-how and state-of-the-art equipment with a broad knowledge in translational medicine and molecular biosciences.

SciLifeLab Drug Discovery & Development Platform (SciLifeLab DDD) was established in 2014 as a national platform for academic drug discovery. SciLifeLab DDD employs around thirty highly motivated scientist, many with industrial experience of drug discovery. The mission is to support swedish academic researchers in developping drug candidates. A technology development around DNA-encoded libraries was initiated during 2018. The project goal is to establish synthesis of novel DNA-encoded compound libraries together with methods for selection and validation of the libraries using selected target proteins.

The Department of Medicinal Chemistry conducts research and teaching in the field of drug discovery. More information about the department and its activities can be found at www.ilk.uu.se. The Departmenthas a total of about 85 employees.

Description:

The Department of Medicinal Chemistry at Uppsala University, is now recruiting a preparative organic chemist to a temporary position to be placed at the SciLifeLab DDD, Medicinal Chemistry Lead Identification Facility. The main focus is to work with synthesis and method development around DNA-encoded libraries. In addition, some synthestic work in our drug discovery projects might occur.

Duties:

Major duty is to perform experimental work. Applicants will primarily be involved in the synthesis, isolation and characterization of DNA-conjugated compounds as well as starting materials, development of DNA-compatible reaction conditions and to be involved in the daily maintenance of laboratory equipment. We are working in projects together with researchers from the DDDP and Academia.

Qualifications:

A PhD in organic or medicinal chemistry or equivalent. Documented expertise of successful work within the area of preparative synthetic chemistry, as documented by publications and/or patents. Experience of analysis by LC-MS.

You should be able to express yourself well in English, in both speech and writing.

Desirable / meritorious:

Experience with parallel synthesis and synthesis and design of chemical libraries, experience in handling and analyze DNA-conjugated molecules and a broad knowledge in organic chemistry. Importantly, you are a highly motivated researcher with the ability to work well in a fast paced multidisciplinary environment and have a distinct quality- and results-focus. To be successful in this project, you need to work in a structured and organized way since a large part of the work will be performed in a parallell fasion and with a small amount of material.

A general eligibility requirement is that the applicant must possess the personal capabilities necessary to carry out fully the duties of the appointment such as ability to communicate, motivation, collaborative skills and ability to prioritise.

The application must include a short letter summarizing research interests/ expertise, CV, doctoral degree and contact information for at least two references.

University values the qualities that even gender distribution and diversity add to the business. We therefore look forward to searching for all sexes and with different birth background, functionality and life experience.

Salary: Individually negotiated salary.

Starting date: At the latest 1 June 2019.

Type of position: Temporary part-time position (100%) during 10 months.
