Uppsala University, Department of Physics and Astronomy

Uppsala University hereby announces the following positions two PhD positions in Theoretical Physics at the Department of Physics and Astronomy.  The first is on integrable systems and their applications.  The second is on quantum field theory in general.

The PhD positions are hosted by the Division of Theoretical Physics, and the starting date is 1 September 2019, or upon agreement.

At the Division of Theoretical Physics we are engaged in research in quantum field theory, string theory, supergravity, and related mathematical physics. Examples of our activities include supersymmetry, gauge/gravity duality, integrability, scattering amplitudes, conformal bootstrapping, gravitational waves, and cosmology.

The prospective PhD candidate for the first position is expected to work in the field of quantum integrability and its applications to mathematical or physical problems.  The candidate for the second position is expected to work on formal aspects of quantum field theory.  The PhD positions are partially funded by the Knut and Alice Wallenberg Foundation grant  "Exact Results in Gauge and String Theory”.  The research  will be supervised by Dmytro Volin for the first position and Joseph Minahan for the second. More details about their research interests can be found at the Department of Physics and Astronomy.

The positions require a masters degree or equivalent in physics or mathematics for the first position and in physics for the second. The application must include a letter saying which position or positions they are applying for.  The letter should also give a brief description of the applicant, their merits and research interests.  The application must also include a CV, copies of university grades, completed theses or manuscripts and other relevant publications. The applicant should arrange to have two letters of recommendation included in the application. Preference will be given to candidates with a strong academic background and some research experience in the fields: quantum field theory, supersymmetry, integrable systems, algebra and representation theory.

The position as a salaried PhD student is limited to four years of full-time research, four years nine months if departmental work is included. The main activity will be research studies. Other duties at the department related to teaching and administration may be included in the position (maximum 20%).

Further information regarding the research education can be found at the home page of the department http://www.physics.uu.se and on the home page of the faculty of science and technology http://www.teknat.uu.se.

Rules governing Ph.D. candidates are set out in the Higher Education Ordinance Chapter 5, §§ 1-7 and in Uppsala university's rules and guidelines http://regler.uu.se/search/?hits=30&languageId=1&search-language_en=English
