Uppsala universitet, Institutionen för kemi - Ångström

The Department of Chemistry - Ångström laboratory conducts research and education in the chemistry field. The department has more than 200 employees and has a turnover just over 200 million SEK. At the department's seven programs, we conduct very successful research of a high international standard. We have a large number of externally funded research projects, often with international cooperation and we see continued good growth in our subject area. The department has education assignments in engineering and civil engineering programs and master's programs.

Subject description: The project combines principles from dye-sensitized solar cells and organometallic catalysis, with the overall goal to achieve photoelectrochemical fuel production.

Work duties: The project targets the photo-chemical production of solar fuels in molecular hybrid cells, funded through the Swedish Energy Agency. It comprises the development of molecular catalysts of energy relevance, i.e. water oxidation and proton and CO2 reduction catalysts, and their immobilization onto semiconductor surfaces. In combination with suitable molecular chromophores, photoanodes and –cathodes will be constructed and their performance evaluated. Complete photoelectrochemical cells will be assembled from the prepared photoelectrodes. Particular focus will lie on strategies to increase device efficiency and to prolong device longevity.

Requirements: A suitable background is a PhD in Chemistry, with solid experience in at least one of the following fields is mandatory: organometallic chemistry, preferably in an energy context, surface immobilization and characterization, electrochemistry, photoelectrochemistry, photoelectrode and device fabrication. The candidates is expected to work in a team, but to advance the projects independently, to help in the supervision of younger co-workers, to be innovative and not afraid to acquire novel concepts and techniques. Very good oral and written proficiency in English is mandatory.

Consideration will also be given to good collaborative skills, drive and independence, and how the applicant’s experience and skills complement and strengthen ongoing research within the department, and how they stand to contribute to its future development.

Uppsala University strives to be an inclusive workplace that promotes equal opportunities and attracts qualified candidates who can contribute to the University’s excellence and diversity. We welcome applications from all sections of the community and from people of all backgrounds.
