Uppsala University, Department of Chemistry - Ångström Laboratory

The Department of Chemistry - Ångström laboratory conducts research and education in the chemistry field. The department has more than 200 employees and has a turnover just over 200 million SEK. At the department's seven programs, we conduct very successful research of a high international standard. We have a large number of externally funded research projects, often with international cooperation and we see continued good growth in our subject area. The department has education assignments in engineering and civil engineering programs and master's programs.

Subject description: As researcher in Microbial Chemistry, you will be part of a research group that has the long-term goal of using advanced genetic engineering to develop photosynthetic microorganisms converting solar energy and atmospheric carbon dioxide into chemicals and fuels in direct processes. The model system is cyanobacteria. In this externally funded research project, the focus is on developing cyanobacterial cells an efficient production of the alcohol butanol. Obtained engineered cells will be used to demonstrate sustainable solar fuels production in small scale growth systems.

Work duties: Independent and in cooperation with other members of the Microbial Chemistry research group and international partners engineer cyanobacteria for an efficient production of the alchol butanol. Use the obtained strains in small scale growth systems to demonstrate sustainable butanol production. In addition, supervision of new members of the research group and project specific administration is included.

Requirements:

  • A PhD within Molecular biology, Biochemistry, Microbial biotechnology or similar.
  • Very good oral and written proficiency in English.
  • Own experiences to genetically modify and analyze cyanobacteria that form butanol in direct processes.
  • Demonstrated experiences to summarize and present the results obtained, and to compile scientific publications for publication in relevant journals.

Additional qualifications: Consideration will also be given to good collaborative skills, drive and independence, and how the applicant’s experience and skills complement and strengthen ongoing research within the department, and how they stand to contribute to its future development.

Uppsala University strives to be an inclusive workplace that promotes equal opportunities and attracts qualified candidates who can contribute to the University’s excellence and diversity. We welcome applications from all sections of the community and from people of all backgrounds.
