Uppsala University, Department of Chemistry - Ångström Laboratory

The Department of Chemistry - Ångström laboratory conducts research and education in the chemistry field. The department has more than 200 employees and has a turnover of just over 200 million SEK. At the department's seven programs, we conduct very successful research of a high international standard. We have a large number of externally funded research projects, often with international cooperation and we see continued good growth in our subject area. The department has education assignments in engineering and civil engineering programs and master's programs.

Subject description: Synthesis of thin films using the technique chemical vapor deposition (CVD) is a research area having a strong international position and has been ongoing at the inorganic chemistry program at the department of chemistry, Uppsala University since the 1970s. CVD is a technique where a solid material is deposited on a usually heated surface as a thin film. Examples on applications are within electronics and wear resistant hard films. Swedish industry is today world leaders in the field of thin hard and wear resistant films. The research will be conducted in this area together with groups from Chalmers, The Royal Institute of Technology, Sandvik Coromant AB and Seco Tools AB in the form of a consortium named CVD 2.0. More information about the project is available on www.cvd2.se. The consortium will also be conducted together with several thin film groups at the Angstrom laboratory, including the PVD group at inorganic chemistry directed by Ulf Jansson (program responsible for the inorganic chemistry program).

Work duties: The main duties involved in a post-doctoral position is to conduct research. Teaching and/or supervising PhD students may also be included, but up to no more than 20% of working hours. As a post doc you will be an important part of the consortium where you will actively work with both academy and industry. The research will focus on the next generation multi-functional coatings using CVD. Example of such a new coating is to use an intelligent combination of hardness, low friction and inertness. One way to achieve this is to use a multi-phase coating. Knowledge in this field will be beneficial.

Requirements: For employment as postdoc, the applicant should have a PhD exam or an international equivalent within the field of Chemistry or Physics within a maximum of three (3) years before the final application date. During certain circumstances, an earlier PhD can be acceptable. Certain circumstances include leave due to illness, maternity leave, in trade unions, etc. The applicant should have very good knowledge in English, spoken and written and previous knowledge in thin film technology.

Assessment criteria and other qualifications: This is a career development position primarily focused on research. The position is intended as an initial step in a career, and the assessment of the applicants will primarily be based on their research qualifications and potential as researchers. Particular emphasis will be placed on research skills within the subject area CVD.

Consideration will also be given to good collaborative skills, drive and independence, and how the applicant’s experience and skills complement and strengthen ongoing research within the department, and how they stand to contribute to its future development.

Uppsala University strives to be an inclusive workplace that promotes equal opportunities and attracts qualified candidates who can contribute to the University’s excellence and diversity. We welcome applications from all sections of the community and from people of all backgrounds.
