The Department of Immunology, Genetics and Pathology (IGP) at Uppsala University (igp.uu.se) has a broad research profile with strong research groups focused on genomics, cancer and molecular diagnostics. One goal of IGP is to promote a close collaboration between clinical and preclinical researchers. Research is presently conducted in the areas of medical and clinical genetics, clinical immunology, bioinformatics, pathology, tumor biology and vascular biology. The department is also integrated with the units of clinical genetics, clinical immunology and clinical pathology-cytology at Akademiska Hospital, Uppsala. IGP is involved in many educations at the Medicine and pharmacy domain but is also involved in teaching at the Science and technology domain. IGP provides a well-developed infrastructure for studying molecular medicine. The yearly turnover is around 400 million SEK and there are approximately 680 employees or affiliated personnel, of which more than 100 are PhD-students.

Project description:
A PhD student position is available for highly motivated individuals with interest in bioinformatics to join the laboratory of Associate Professor Åsa Johansson at Uppsala University, Dept. of Immunology, Genetics and Pathology. Åsa Johansson's research group work with molecular epidemiology. Over the past decade, we have found thousands of genetic variants that influence or the risk of developing diseases and disorders such as obesity, myocardial infarction, and high blood pressure. However, the genetic variants that have been identified explain only a small part of the heritability behind our common diseases. Our research is interdisciplinary and includes the fields of genomics, epigenomics, proteomics and epidemiology. We work with population-based cohorts, and use large-scale methods for highthrough sequencing and measurements of different molecules (lipids, proteins, DNA methylation).

A key objective of the project is to investigate how genetic variants affect the risk of common diseases such as obesity, heart attack and asthma. You will use existing bioinformatics and statistical methods for data analysis and also develop own methods and pipelines to process and analyse data. You will primarily work with whole-genome sequencing data from large human population-based cohorts

The successful candidate will devote most of the time towards his/her research level education. Other service activities within the department, e.g. education and administrative work can be included within the framework of the employment (maximum 20%). The position will be extended with the time devoted to teaching to allow four years of full time graduate studies.

Qualifications:
The applicant should have MSc degree in a relevant area (e.g. Bioinformatics, Computer science, Computational biology, Biostatistics). Documented practical experience of programming, and statistical and bioinformatics analyses of genetic/genomic data is considered a strong merit. Documented oral and written proficiency in English is required. Good recommendations from previous supervisors / teachers is a requirement.

Salary: According to local agreements for PhD students at Uppsala University.
