Project description: Many photovoltaic (PV) systems are applied on buildings connected to local electricity networks. An important issue, especially for larger PV systems, is where the systems should be located and connected for maximum system and resource efficiency. In this project, solar deployment plans that identify the most favorable conditions for new systems based on a variety of parameters will be developed to aid spatial planners on municipal and regional level. The project is performed in collaboration with industrial and municipal partners within the research project “Solar Utilization Plans for System and Resource Effective Deployment of Photovoltaic Systems”, funded by the Swedish Energy Agency.

Work duties: Develop a methodology for generation of solar cadastres for roof and ground based PV systems based on high-resolution terrain models derived from LiDAR data. Develop solar deployment plans at municipal level by combining solar cadastres with geospatial data for the built environment such as grid infrastructure, land use, and protected areas due to cultural heritage. Apply the methods in case studies for a Swedish municipality. Departmental duties, usually teaching, will at most cover 20%.

Admission requirements: A person meets the general admission requirements for third-cycle courses and study programmes if he or she:

  • has been awarded a second-cycle qualification, or
  • has satisfied the requirements for courses comprising at least 240 credits of which at least 60 credits were awarded in the second cycle, or
  • has acquired substantially equivalent knowledge in some other way in Sweden or abroad.

Requirements: The candidate must hold an MSc degree in power systems, energy systems or other areas relevant to the PhD topic, preferably combined with a strong background in mathematics, computer simulation and GIS. The candidate should also have good collaborative skills as well as independence in their work. Very good knowledge in English, verbally and in writing.

Application: Please use the link below. Applications must include a personal letter describing research interests and past experience, a CV, copies of diplomas, certificates, copy of MSc thesis, letters of recommendation and/or contact details to 2-3 references and other relevant documents.

Rules governing PhD candidates are set out in the Higher Education Ordinance Chapter 5, §§ 1-7 and in Uppsala University's rules and guidelines http://regler.uu.se/search/?hits=30&languageId=1&search-language_en=English
