Duties:

Primary duties involve teaching courses for the Unit for Professional English, which is a part of the Department of English and provides English courses for Uppsala University staff, as well as administrative duties and responsibilities. Duties also include teaching the department’s regular courses. Teaching duties include examination, course responsibility, and course administration. The position includes a 20% research allocation. In order to actively participate in Department and Faculty work, the holder of the position will be assumed to be present at the workplace regularly.

Eligibility:

To be eligible for appointment as a senior lecturer, a PhD degree in English, or equivalent, is required. The appointee will also have completed training in the pedagogy of Higher Education, or have acquired equivalent pedagogical skills through other means, as well as have the teaching skills and other qualities required to fulfil the requirements of the position well.

The ability to teach in English is a requirement. Previous experience of teaching English for specific purposes is of special merit.

Assessment criteria:

In ranking of eligible applicants, special weight will be accorded to documented teaching competence in teaching courses in English for specific purposes and academic writing in English. This should include documented ability to deliver, assess and revise courses; as well as experience in setting and marking students’ work. Attention will be given to the quality of teaching; teaching skills must be documented in a manner that allows their quality to be assessed. In the evaluation of pedagogical ability, documented previous experience of teaching academic writing skills in English will be given special weight.

Research qualifications in English will also be assessed. The ability to initiate and conduct original research that may contribute to the ongoing work with English for specific purposes and academic writing at the Department of English is an advantage.

Good interpersonal skills and a documented ability to cooperate with colleagues will be considered when assessing candidates, as will previous experience of administration.

In appointing a person to this academic post, priority will be given to the applicant who, after a holistic assessment of competence and skills, is judged, alongside documented qualifications, to possess the greatest potential for performing and further developing the relevant duties and for advancing the subject area.

  • A short narrative account of the applicant’s teaching experience and philosophy. The portfolio of teaching qualifications must be organized in such a manner that makes it possible to assess the quality of these qualifications.

Applicants must therefore submit a list of references who can elucidate the applicant’s professional competence and personal qualities that have bearing on the post, such as leadership qualities and the capacity to cooperate with others.
