Uppsala University, Department of Earth Sciences

The Department of Earth Sciences at Uppsala University is one of the largest and scientifically broadest Earth Science Department in Sweden and includes research programmes in Mineralogy, petrology and tectonics, Geophysics, Palaeobiology, Hydrogeology, Meteorology and Natural resource science.

Duties/Project description: The wind resource over sea is larger than over land, making offshore localization attractive. Difficulties in more exact assessment of wind climate is due to factors such as e.g. how the dynamic wave field shall be included in the calculations. Additionally, for inland seas (Baltic Sea) the meteorological conditions differ from open sea conditions due to the land proximity. This produces effects such as low-level jets, which have a major impact on the wind resource since they may exists close to hub height. The ability of current operational models to capture this feature in the offshore environment is still unclear.

Here we conduct an in-depth study of these factors for the Baltic Sea in order to recommend a best model set-up for wind power applications. This includes both climatological wind resource calculations and evaluation of short-term forecast with focus on low-level jets. The work will be conducted in collaboration with SMHI (Swedish met. office).

Requirements: The applicant shall have a university science master degree in meteorology or similar. Other technical or science degrees may also be considered, in particularly oceanography or engineering. The successful candidate shall have a solid base in mathematics, physics, and basic computer skills. Previous experience of programming and numerical modelling is considered a merit.

Application: Applications should include a personal letter describing your background (max 1 page) and brief description of research interests (1/2 page), a CV, copies of diplomas and certificates, thesis as well as other relevant documents that the applicant wishes to refer to.

The holder of a Ph.D.-student position shall primarily devote her/his time to own research studies. Other departmental work, such as educational or administrative can be part of position (max 20%). The applicant must be eligible for Ph.D. studies. Priority is given to those who are deemed to show the greatest aptitude for a successful completion of graduate studies.

Rules governing Ph.D. candidates are set out in the Higher Education Ordinance Chapter 5, §§ 1-7 and in Uppsala university's rules and guidelines http://regler.uu.se/search/?hits=30&languageId=1&search-language_en=English
