Uppsala University, Department of Physics and Astronomy

Uppsala University hereby declares the following position to be open for application: PhD position in Condensed Matter Theory at the Department of Physics and Astronomy. Starting date: April 2019. Research division: Materials theory.

Project description: We are looking for a highly motivated and ambitious Ph.D. student in condensed matter theory for a project on multiband and odd-frequency superconductivity. Odd-frequency superconductivity is a very unique superconducting state where the pair amplitude is odd in time, or equivalently frequency, the very opposite to the ordinary behavior of superconductivity. The overall aim of the Ph.D. project is to find new odd-frequency states in primarily multiband and multiorbital superconducting systems and to discern measurable signatures of this state. Examples range from the iron-based high-temperature superconductors, to nanoscale and hybrid systems. The project involves both analytical work using advanced many-body methods and large-scale numerical work. This Ph.D. project is part of a larger project focusing on new materials and mechanisms for odd-frequency superconductivity, funded by the European Research Council (ERC).

Research environment: The division of Materials theory at Uppsala University offers a world-class environment for materials theory research, with interests spanning from strongly correlated and topological states of matter to atomistic spin simulations and first-principles calculations of a very broad range of functional materials. The division currently consists of approximately 90 researchers, of which about a third are Ph.D. students. The project will be carried out in the research group of Prof. Annica Black-Schaffer, currently consisting of ten Ph.D. students and postdocs. For more information, please visit the group webpage: http://materials-theory.physics.uu.se/blackschaffer.

Employment: The position as a PhD student is limited to four years of full-time studies, consisting of research and coursework. Other duties at the department, related to teaching and administration, may extend the position at a level of most 20%. Further information is available at www.physics.uu.se.

Application: The applicant should have a Master’s degree in physics, or equivalent, with a strong background in condensed matter theory or many-body theory. Prior experience with superconductivity is an advantage but not required. Fluency in both written and spoken English is an absolute prerequisite. The application should include a personal letter, explaining scientific interests and motivation for pursuing a PhD degree, CV, and a verified list of course grades. If available, a Master’s thesis (finished or in draft form) can also be included. In addition, two letters of recommendation should be included in the application or, alternatively, sent directly by the letter writer to annica.black-schaffer@physics.uu.se with the subject line “Letter of Recommendation, Ph.D. Position 2019”.

Rules governing PhD candidates are set out in the Higher Education Ordinance Chapter 5, §§ 1-7 and in Uppsala university's rules and guidelines http://regler.uu.se/search/?hits=30&languageId=1&search-language_en=English

Uppsala University strives to be an inclusive workplace that promotes equal opportunities and attracts qualified candidates who can contribute to the University’s excellence and diversity.
