Uppsala University, Department of Engineering Sciences

The position is at the Department of Engineering, Div. of Nanotechnology and Functional Materials, Ångström Laboratory.

Duties/Project description: At the Div. of Nanotechnology and Functional Materials we are developing materials for use in rechargeable batteries which are built up of organic compounds in order to provide an alternative to existing battery technologies that are associated with low CO2 footprints.

The project is being carried out in close collaboration with the Organic Synthetic Chemistry group at the Department of Chemistry at BMC. The base of the electrode material consists of a conductive polymer and our strategy for obtaining competitive electrode material is to substitute the monomers of which the polymer is made up with high-capacity redox-active compounds. This position includes organic synthesis, polymerization of existing and developed compounds, electrochemical and spectroscopic characterization of polymeric electrode materials, and construction of battery prototypes. The work includes active participation in developing new materials and designing new target structures for organic synthesis.

Admission requirements: A person meets the general admission requirements for third-cycle courses and study programmes if he or she:

has been awarded a second-cycle qualification, or has satisfied the requirements for courses comprising at least 240 credits of which at least 60 credits were awarded in the second cycle, or has acquired substantially equivalent knowledge in some other way in Sweden or abroad.

Qualification requirements: To qualify for this position you should have a Master in chemistry or equivalent and have the ambition to specialize in experimental research aiming at the development of polymeric materials for battery applications. Proven practical experience in electrochemical methods and/or organic synthesis is also required. Knowledge in general organic synthesis, reaction kinetics, electron transfer theory, polymer chemistry and spectroscopy (UV-Vis, IR) are meritorious, which is also basic knowledge in computational chemistry.

Good communication skills and interest in working in a multidisciplinary research environment towards common goals is of great importance as well as an in-depth interest in understanding the processes that take place in polymeric battery materials.

You should be highly focused, structured and highly motivated and able to work independently as well as in team. Good collaborative ability is a requirement and previous experience of working in collaborative projects is desirable. You must have very good knowledge in English (verbally and in writing).

Application: The application should contain a brief description of the research interests and relevant experience, CV, publication list, copies of diplomas and grades, thesis work (or a draft thereof) and other relevant documents. We would like you to provide reference information or attach a letter of recommendation. For application, please use the link below.
