Uppsala University, Department of Peace and Conflict Research

The Department of Peace and Conflict Research was established in 1971 to conduct peace  research and offer Courses in peace and conflict studies. Currently approx. 70 persons are employed at the Department and at present some 300-400 students are enrolled every academic year. For the department and the project "Demagogues of Hate or Shepherds of Peace? Why 'Warlord Democrats' (Re) securitize Wartime Identities" we are now looking for a research assistant for a full-time permanent employment, starting January 2019.

Duties:
The research assistant will, amongst other things, do the following tasks:

  • systematically code empirical data on former military leaders and transitional justice mechanisms in post-civil war countries
  • do textual analysis of speeches made by former military leaders
  • write literature reviews on transitional justice and post-civil war democratization
  • do desk research on former military leaders in Nigeria.

Requirements:
Applicants must have a Master Degree in Peace and Conflict Research, or in Political Science; experience of systematically coding large amounts of empirical data; as well as excellent knowledge of English (both in writing and reading). The applicant must also be able to work independently and work well with colleagues.


Additional qualifications:

  • Good knowledge of Uppsala Conflict Data Program (UCDP) definitions
  • Experience of working with textual analysis.
  • Experience of working with/writing about transitional justice mechanisms
  • Experience of conducting research on/working with Nigeria.
  • Previous experience of working as a research assistant.
