Uppsala University, Department of Peace and Conflict Research

The Department of Peace and Conflict Research was established in 1971 to conduct peace  research and offer Courses in peace and conflict studies. Currently approx. 70 persons are employed at the Department and at present some 300-400 students are enrolled every academic year. UCDP The Uppsala Conflict Data Program (UCDP) has recorded ongoing violent conflicts since the 1970s. The data provided is one of the most accurate and well-used data-sources on global armed conflicts and its definition of armed conflict is becoming a standard in how conflicts are systematically defined and studied.

Tasks:
The tasks include assisting the project management mainly by coding violent events from news articles and other sources into the UCDP database, but also with text writing to varying degrees.

Qualifications:

  • Applicants must have a master's degree in peace and conflict research, or in a similar subject, which the employer finds equivalent.
  • Furthermore, the applicants must have good knowledge of political violence and theories of peace and conflict. Independent analytical ability is required. Applicants must also have very good spoken and written English, as well as having a good knowledge of the UCDP and its definitions.
  • Previous experience with similar data collection work within the conflict area is also required.

Merit:
Previous experience of handling and working with conflict data. Weight will be put on personal suitability.
