Subject Area/Scope: In the future large scale computation and networking will be much more integrated with cloud and distributed edge computing. Driving forces behind this integration are the general expectations that huge amounts of streaming data will come from massive Internet-of-Things and sensors and that there is a need for smarter and distributed servers to do data Filtering and Mining, Analytics as well as AI/Machine learning. The communication patterns will be triggered by when and where these computations should take place in a sensor/edge/cloud chain of distributed servers and how expensive it will be to move big chunks data in terms of time and energy in this chain.
Project Description: The postdoc will work in the long term project “Future factories in the cloud”. It is a forward looking project on the digitalisation of industry. The research focus is on distributed sensor/cloud/edge architectures supporting smart industrial components for future factories. About 30 researchers from three Swedish universities work on the project. Real-time, secure, and energy-efficient communication infrastructures are central for the Uppsala University parts of the project.
Duties: The candidate is expected to integrate the operation of autonomous robots; for example, aerial drones and ground rovers, with edge and cloud computing architectures. Safety, security and energy issues must also be considered. Additional duties include:
Requirements: Qualified applicants should have a Ph.D. degree in Computer Science/Engineering or a related discipline. The degree should have been obtained not more than three years ago (with compensation for sick leave, parental leave, etc.).
Additional qualifications: The ideal candidate has expertise both in backend software development and networking as well as in embedded programming of mobile autonomous platforms, e.g. robots, drones or vehicles. It is desirable that the candidate master theory, modelling, design, and implementations for these platforms. The candidate must show concrete evidence of such expertise through publications at major venues or concrete prototype implementations.
Uppsala University strives to be an inclusive workplace that promotes equal opportunities and attracts qualified candidates who can contribute to the University’s excellence and diversity. We welcome applications from all sections of the community and from people of all backgrounds.
