Uppsala University, Department of Physics and Astronomy

The Department of Physics and Astronomy is the second largest at Uppsala University with more than 400 employees and 11 different divisions and is situated at Ångström Laboratory in Uppsala. The Department was formed in January 2010 by merging the former Department of Physics and Astronomy with the Department of Physics and Materials Science.

Information about the project: The project will develop the conceptually new paradigm for ultra-dense and ultrafast magnetic storage that is posed to exceed the current technology by two orders of magnitude in storage density and by about four orders of magnitude in operation speed. This will be achieved in an all-optical magnetoplasmonic platform that would allow deterministic, non-thermal, low-energy, ultrafast magnetization switching at few nanometers and potentially down to a molecular length-scale. The project will elucidate the fundamentals of such process, will demonstrate its practical realization and will map its suitability for future upscaling towards industrial implementation in devices. The project is a European venture, coordinated in the University of Gothenburg, combining seven universities and research centers in Sweden, Spain, Netherlands, UK, Italy and Switzerland and a large synchrotron radiation facility and a spintronics industrial partner.

The work will be performed at the Division of Materials Physics of the Department of Physics and Astronomy, Uppsala University. Please see http://www.physics.uu.se/research/materials-physics+/ for more information about the research in the Division of Materials Physics.

Major responsibilities: You will lead the experimental work in optical and magneto-optical characterization of magnetoplasmonic structures. Furthermore, magnetic microscopy and magnetization dynamics studies of magnetoplasmonic nano-arrays will be included in the project.

Your major responsibility as scientist is to perform your line of research in a general setting of a research group. The position might include supervision of Master and/or PhD students to a certain extent. Another important aspect involves collaboration within academia and with society at large. The position is meritorious for future research duties within academia as well as industry/the public sector.

Position summary: Experimental research in the field of nano-optics, nanoplasmonics, nanomagnetism and spintronics. You will characterize magnetoplasmonic architectures by ellipsometry, polarimetry and magneto-optical scattering. You will also perform studies of the light-induced magnetization dynamics of magnetoplasmonic nanoarchitectures. Full-time temporary employment. The position is limited to a maximum of two years.

Qualifications: We search for a candidate with a PhD degree in experimental/applied physics. We require is also that the applicant has previous post-doctoral experience within a combination of relevant subject. A background directly related to the project (such as nano-optics, plasmonics, nanomagnetism) is highly desirable, together with excellent skills in data analysis. Good communication skills in English and Swedish are also required. The candidate should be able to work individually and at the same time be able to collaborate with others within the research group.

The application should include:

  • 1 Letter of motivation, with a short description of your research interests, and why you feel you are a good match for the project (max two pages, ideally one).
  • 2 CV, including a description of relevant skills and experiences, as well as a full publication list.
  • 3 Copy of degree diploma, other official transcripts.
  • 4 Contact information to a minimum of two individuals, who can provide letters of reference to support your application, with a short description of how these individuals are professionally related to you.

In the event of special circumstances leading to a career break, these should be mentioned in the CV (with dates) so that the assessment of scientific output can take these factors into account. Examples of such special circumstances include a leave of absence due to sickness, parental leave, serving on commissions of trust, military service etc

Uppsala University strives to be an inclusive workplace that promotes equal opportunities and attracts qualified candidates who can contribute to the University’s excellence and diversity. We welcome applications from all sections of the community and from people of all backgrounds.

Salary: Individually negotiated salary.

Starting date: 01-01-2019 or as otherwise agreed.
