Uppsala University, Department of Engineering Sciences

The postdoc position will be performed in the subject Engineering Physics with specialization in Microsystem Technology, and be located to the Department of Engineering Sciences, starting as soon as possible and not later than January 2019.

The Division of Microsystems Technology at Uppsala University is devoted to research on microsystems with application in a wide variety of science spanning from biology to space. However, the common aim for all our research is investigating how the inherent properties of a system changes when it is made smaller, and how these changes can be utilized to create more able technology.

Two of our projects involve the technology development of microfluidic stretchable electronics. In a more general sense, a stretchable substrate based on a novel soft, and stretchable silicone material provides compliant and comfortable, intelligent and wireless, patches that will not move relative to the tissue even at excessive movements. These intelligent patches are used on the skin or implanted for health, fitness and medical technology. We have developed the basic technology for stretchable printed circuit boards, where liquid based alloys allow for rigid components to be embedded without contact failure also at dynamic stretching.

The projects are working on medical technology with partners in Europe but most intensively with partners at the medical faculty of our University and the company Mycronic in Täby, Sweden.

The announced position is intended to build on our recent research, and study new ways of manufacturing stretchable electronics. Research will be conducted in a wide range of scientific fields, focusing on material science and microsystems technology, but also collaborating on wireless technology and the application demonstrations. The work will be conducted in a very interdisciplinary environment, where close contacts with future users in clinical medicine and performance enhancement in sports is a prerequisite for success.

Duties: Research 100%

Qualification Requirements: To qualify for an employment on a post-doctoral position the applicant must hold a PhD degree or a foreign degree equivalent to a PhD degree. The PhD degree must have been obtained no more than three years prior to the application deadline. The three year period can be extended on circumstances such as sick leave, parental leave, duties in trade unions, etc.

We are looking for a person with a PhD exam in Chemistry, Chemical Engineering, Materials Science, Microsystem Technology, or equivalent. When selecting among qualified candidates, great importance will be attached to the prerequisites and interest of interdisciplinary collaboration, since a significant part of the research will be conducted in collaboration with other researchers from different subjects within the research environment. Extra merit is given to previous experience in areas relating to manufacture and use of microsystems and soft materials, especially stretchable electronics. You should be focused, structured and able to work efficiently by yourself and with others. Good communication skills in English, both spoken and written, are required.
