Uppsala university, Department of Medical Biochemistry and Microbiology

The Lindblad-Toh laboratory’s research programs within the collaborative environment of Uppsala University, Faculty of Medicine and SciLifeLab focus on, but are not restricted to, using comparative genomics to unravel the complexities of complex disease, spanning cancer, innate and acquired immunity, and neurobiology. To achieve this goal, we layer population level genome-wide association studies, with an array of omics and traditional genetic, biochemical, and physiological techniques applied to canine models, human cell lines and patient samples.

We are seeking an innovative, energetic and collaborative individual to work as part of a team to extend our project by enhancing the functionality of the dog as a model for human cancer and neurobiology through the generation of novel functional resources (RNA seq at the level of gross tissue and single cell, ATAC-Seq, ChIP-Seq, HI-C etc).

Job Description: Genomic and bioinformatics approaches to improve the canine reference genome and dissect gene regulation. Work closely with a team of researchers, postdocs and bioinformaticians on a large project aiming at understanding the role of functional constraint and convergent evolution on genome regulation.

Your work will include improvement and annotation of the canine reference genome, detection of constraint and accelerated regions indicative of selection and potential convergent evolution between dogs and humans. This will include mining, integration and interrogation of large-scale phenotypic data catalogues derived from in-house and published GWAS and whole genome sequencing experiments, as well as analysis of RNA-Seq and functional genomics data.

Further you will aid in the development and application of function variant screening assays. You will communicate and meet with the group leaders on a regular basis and with external collaborators as the need arises and regularly present data at laboratory meetings. Some teaching may be included.

Required Qualifications:

  • PhD in genomics, mathematics, bioinformatics, computer science, statistics or a related discipline. To be eligible to apply you must have a PhD completed within three years of the application deadline. If you received your PhD earlier but special circumstances exist you are also eligible to apply.
  • Quantitative skills and experience in the computational analysis of genomic or other biological data, as demonstrated through peer-reviewed publications.
  • Programming experience with several computing languages including R.
  • Ability to analyse and interpret data from large scale sequencing projects including population-based RNA-sequencing, whole genome sequencing, exome sequencing, ChIP-Sequencing, and directed sequencing using site target amplification is advantageous.
  • Prior experience in data mining and integration is strongly desired, including the visualization and interpretation of complex data sets.
  • Experience in using a high performance computing cluster and working with human genomics databases (including Ensembl, NCBI, UCSC, HapMap, GEO, ArrayExpress, 1000 genomes) is valued.
  • Innovative and creative thinking.
  • The ability to work both as part of a team as well as independently, organizing work efficiently and prioritising workload.
  • Clearly present at scientific meetings, and to undertake further training as appropriate.
  • Willingness to both provide and act on constructive criticism.
  • Excellent written and oral English skills.
