Uppsala university, Department of Information Technology

This postdoctoral position is part of a multi-disciplinary research collaboration between the Centre for Image Analysis at the Division of Visual Information and Interaction, Deptartment of Information Technology, and the Section of Radiology, Department of Surgical Sciences, Uppsala University. Our research focus is on digital image processing, image analysis, and human-computer interaction with applications to medicine.

The Department of Information Technology provides education and research of the highest international quality. The department educates roughly 4,000 students each year, and houses about 30 research teams. The strong research focus impacts and provides an excellent foundation for undergraduate education in the department. The department is building on activities in IT that have been carried on at Uppsala University since the mid 1960s. More info: http://www.it.uu.se/.

The Centre for Image Analysis has a long tradition of theoretical and applied research and graduate education in computerized image analysis and scientific visualization. The focus is not only on image processing as such, but also on developing better methods, algorithms and systems for applications primarily in microscopy, medical imaging, and text recognition. Research Project: Many brain injuries and diseases can damage brain cells, which can lead to loss of nerve cells and, secondarily, loss of brain volume. Even slight loss of nerve cells can give severe neurological and cognitive symptoms. The increasing resolution in magnetic resonance (MR) neuroimaging allows detection and quantification of very small volume changes. Due to the enormous amount of information in a typical MR brain volume scan, interactive tools for computer aided analysis are essential for subtle change detection.

This project will, in close collaboration with neuroradiologists at the Uppsala University Hospital, implement and develop interactive techniques and methods for detection and quantification in neuroradiology image processing of MR image data. The methods will build on our expertise in patient specific, interactive deep learning image segmentation.

Duties: The position is focused on research in the above described research project but may include a limited amount of teaching and departmental duties, but not more than 20%.

Appointment period: The position is for two years, with starting date as soon as possible.

Qualifications: For employment as a postdoctoral researcher, the candidate should have obtained a doctorate or equivalent foreign degree in Computerized Image Processing, Computer Science or related areas, no more than three years before the end of the application date. If there are special reasons, the doctorate may have completed the degree earlier. Special reasons refers to unemployment due to illness, parental leave, military service, trust in trade unions, etc.
Documented experience in Computerized Image Processing, Computer Science or related areas, preferably with a background in medical image processing and programming, is of particular importance. Personal qualities such as dedication, motivation, initiative and independence are valuable. Fluency in spoken and written English is required.

MeritoriousExperience in user interface development is meritorious as well as fluency in spoken and written Swedish are meritorious.

How to apply: The application should include a personal statement where the applicant presents a biography including a motivation why he or she is interested in joining our project, relevant qualifications and research interests. The application should also contain a list of credentials (CV), copies of relevant certificates and grades, a list of publications and other relevant documents (for example, a list of reference persons).

Diversity: Uppsala University aims for gender balance and diversity in all activities in order to achieve a higher quality at all levels of the organization. We therefore welcome applicants of any gender and with different birth background, functionality and life experience.
