The Department of Information Technology has approximately 280 employees and conducts research and education in a spectrum of areas within Computer Science and Information Technology. The research is organized in five Divisions, and the research at the Division of Visual Information and Interaction is a unique combination of expertise in computerized image analysis and human-computer interaction. Research project: You will join a recently started project funded by the Swedish Foundation for Strategic Research (SSF): Hierarchical Analysis of Temporal and Spatial Data (HASTE) http://haste.research.it.uu.se. This interdisciplinary project aims at developing new, intelligent ways of processing and managing very large amounts of microscopy images in order to be able to leverage the imminent explosion of image data from modern experimental setups in the biosciences. One central idea is to represent datasets as intelligently formed information hierarchies, and to prioritize data acquisition and analysis to certain regions/sections of data based on automatically obtained metrics for usefulness and interestingness. To arrive at such smart systems for scientific discovery, we will pursue a range of topics such as efficient image data mining, deep learning and machine learning models with quantifiable confidence that learn an object’s interestingness, and development of intelligent and efficient cloud computing and data storage e-infrastructure based on the quality and interestingness of data. Data sources range from cultured cells to tissue samples and model systems such as organoids and zebrafish. Project partners are at the Department of Information Technology, Uppsala University, Department of Pharmaceutical Biosciences, Uppsala University, Science for Life Laboratory, Vironova AB and AstraZeneca AB.  

Duties: The position is for two years, and focused on research in the above described research project but may include a limited amount (max 5%) of teaching, and institutional (max 5%) duties.

Qualifications: To be eligible for a position as postdoctoral researcher the applicant's Ph.D. degree must have been obtained no more than three years prior to the application date; however, periods of sick leave, parental leave, union mission or similar are deducted from the three-year period. The candidates must have a PhD degree in informatics, computer science or related areas relevant to the project topic, combined with documented experience from algorithm development and programming. A strong mathematical background and expertise in digital image processing/analysis are required. Experience in working with deep learning is meriting. The postdoc position is highly interdisciplinary and an understanding and/or interest in life science and microscopy imaging applications is meriting. Good communication skills in English, both spoken and written, are required.

Merited: As the project is focused on microscopy data and life science applications, experience and/or strong interest from this field is considered meriting.
