Uppsala university, Department of Medical Biochemistry and Microbiology

National Bioinformatics Infrastructure Sweden (NBIS; http://nbis.se), is furthering life science research in Sweden by providing support and developing infrastructure in the field of bioinformatics. Over 60 experts are currently employed at multiple sites in Sweden, supporting projects in a wide array of areas such as genomics, transcriptomics, proteomics, metabolomics, statistics, and more. NBIS also constitutes the bioinformatics platform at SciLifeLab (http://www.scilifelab.se), a national resource which facilitates research in molecular biosciences by providing access to advanced technologies and technical know-how. With the close connections to data-producing facilities and daily interactions with leading research groups, NBIS is perfectly positioned to enable world class bioinformatics analyses.

NBIS is now looking for a new member to support Swedish researchers in sekvens-based bioinformatics. The position is at Uppsala University in the creative environment of the SciLifeLab Uppsala node “The Hub”. Here more than 30 bioinformaticians and developers as well as core facilities and many different research groups are interacting. The Hub is the perfect place to grow as a bioinformatician with plenty of discussion partners always being available and also courses and seminars regularly being offered.

Job description: The main responsibility is giving support in bioinformatics to Swedish researchers under a “fee-for-service”-model. Work duties will involve eukaryotic genome annotation, but could also, depending on the qualifications of the applicant, include other subjects such as metagenomics or comparative genomics. Responsibilities include running analyses, communication with clients, staying aware of current developments in the field, writing reports, and teaching.

Qualifications: We are looking for an expert with a strong background in sequence-based bioinformatics. A PhD in bioinformatics, molecular biology, computer science or any related field is meriting, although personal suitability and experience in DNA-based bioinformatics will be ranked higher. Expertise in genome annotation, metagenomics, or comparative genomics are examples of expertise considered beneficial for this position. Ability to work efficiently in a Linux command-line environment is a must and expertise in one or more scripting languages like Python or Perl is ranked highly. The ability to drive projects and work in a collaborative, yet service-minded environment is a must. Excellent communication skills in both written and spoken English are required, since the candidate will collaborate with scientists of very different backgrounds. Emphasis will be placed on personal suitability for the position.

Uppsala University finds that gender balance and diversity brings a higher quality to the organization. We therefore welcome applicants of any gender and with different birth background, functionality and life experience.
