Postdoctoral position with a research focus on migration law - Hiring in process/Finished, not possible to apply

To further strengthen its migration law research environment, the Department of Law at Uppsala University is announcing a two-year position as postdoctoral fellow with a focus on migration law.

Subject description: Migration law is, in Sweden, a relatively new field of law. Legal research in this field is in a dynamic state of development. Key areas of interest include the international, regional and national legal frameworks regulating migration, the relationship between rights and obligations of nation-states and individuals respectively, the legal status of migrants, and migration governance. Migration being about in different ways crossing borders, migration law also cuts across traditional subject divisions. It thus touches on various branches of law, such as international law, public law, EU law, administrative law, procedural law, family law and labour law.

In recent years, the Faculty of Law at Uppsala University has established itself as one of Sweden’s leading research environments in the field of migration law. The Faculty has, in particular, worked to promote migration law in a Swedish perspective. One central feature of this work has been establishing the Lund/Uppsala Migration Law Network, a joint research environment for migration law at the two university faculties of law in Uppsala and Lund. Recently, The Faculty of Law at Gothenburg University joined the network which is now referred to as GL/UMIN. The network welcomes doctoral students as well as senior researchers working on national and international aspects of migration law. Information about this research environment is available on its website, www.migrationlawnetwork.org. The research network will be open to the postdoctoral fellow.

Postdoctoral project orientation: All project proposals in which migration law is a central and integral part of the research project are relevant within the framework of this call. Since migration law is by definition, as mentioned above, a field including international as well as national elements, projects reflecting this are welcomed; it is however not an absolute requirement.

Duties: The postdoctoral fellowship includes 80 per cent research and 20 per cent teaching and/or administrative duties.

The postdoctoral fellow is expected to contribute, both independently and in cooperation with other researchers, to the research and teaching environment at the Department of Law. Moreover, they are expected to publish high-quality research and otherwise promote the development of the Department’s academic milieu.

Some funds for travel will be available, but applicants should endeavour also to apply for external funding for such purposes.

Eligibility: The purpose of the postdoctoral research fellowship is to give recent PhD graduates a chance to further consolidate and develop their skills, and primarily their academic proficiency.

To be eligible for a postdoctoral fellowship, the applicant must have a Swedish doctorate or an equivalent foreign degree. The degree must have been attained within the three years preceding the end of the application period. If special reasons apply, the doctorate may have been awarded earlier. ‘Special reasons’ refers to sick leave, parental leave, service in the Armed Forces and elected positions in trade-union organisations, student organisations or the like.

Application: The application must be submitted through Uppsala University’s recruitment system (Varbi) and include the following:

• A project description in Swedish or English, including a timetable for the intended research project. The project description should address and describe the purpose and objectives of the project, the research context, theoretical perspectives, reflections on choice of materials and methods, and reflections on the added value of the project from a legal research perspective as well as to society. The project description should not exceed 5 A4 pages or 17,000 characters including spaces.

• A popular science summary of the project in Swedish or English not exceeding 2,000 characters including spaces.

• A curriculum vitae (CV) in Swedish or English.

• A list of the academic works/publications referred to. The applicant must specify a maximum of 10 academic writings that are primarily referred to.

• Degree certificate(s) and other relevant documents.

• A letter of recommendation or details of at least one referee.

• The academic publications (max. 10) primarily referred to, numbered according to the publication list.

Applications will be evaluated based on the scientific quality of the research proposal and the qualifications of the researcher. As part of the application procedure, a limited number of personal face-to-face or, alternatively, telephone interviews may be conducted on the basis of the applicant’s project description and appendices.

Application period etc.: The application must reach the Department of Law by 11 January 2019 at the latest. To be considered, the application must be complete. Materials submitted after the deadline will be disregarded.

The Faculty of Law: The Faculty of Law in Uppsala, the oldest faculty of law in the Nordic region, was already in existence when the University was founded in 1477. Its activities comprise a broad range of research fields. Well-established core and postgraduate education of high repute is also provided here.

The Faculty includes the Department of Law, which employs more than 200 people, of whom just over 100 are researchers or teachers. Today, research is under way in a total of 15 research subjects and 9 areas of civil law. This research is in a highly expansive and creative phase. New recruitment of researchers has taken place over the past few years and several research areas have been developed and strengthened. There are currently some 50 doctoral students working on various subjects at the Faculty.
