Uppsala University, Department of Engineering Sciences

The PhD studies will be performed in the subject Engineering Physics with specialization in Microsystem Technology, and be located to the Department of Engineering Sciences, starting during the autumn of 2018.

The Division of Microsystems Technology at Uppsala University is devoted to research on microsystems with application in a wide variety of sciences spanning from biology to space. However, the common aim for all our research is investigating how the inherent properties of a system change when it is made smaller, and how these changes can be utilized to create more able technology.

One of our main projects involves an instrument concept aimed at environmental science, more precisely tracing different organic and inorganic decomposition processes in wood and wetlands. In a more general sense, the instrument studies the distribution of carbon isotopes in different kinds of samples. It is widely known that biological processes favor lighter isotopes, and the isotope ratio of carbon is therefore different if the atoms have been subject to organic or geological process, e.g., weathering. Hence, carbon isotope ratios are crucial to understanding the carbon cycle, particularly in a wet and wooded environment like Sweden, and important input to both local and global environment models.

The instrument is based on technology that has been developed at the division, and utilizes so called microplasma spectroscopy, where the isotope ratio of ionized carbon dioxide molecules can be measured by studying the light they emit. This analysis is performed inside a novel microplasma source that has been developed specifically for the instrument.

The announced position is intended to build on this research, and study new ways of handling and analyzing carbonous samples on the microscale. Research will be conducted in a wide range of scientific fields, spanning from fundamental investigations in material science and microsystems technology, to more applied studies in spectrometry and lab-on-a-chip methodology. Moreover, the work will be conducted in a very interdisciplinary environment, where close contacts with future users in geology and environmental science is a prerequisite for success.

Work: In addition to research and student supervision, the work contains additional work at the department, e.g. teaching, up to a maximum of 20% of time.

Qualification Requirements: We are looking for graduates with a Master's or Master of Science degree in Engineering Physics, Analytical Chemistry, Materials Science, Microsystem Technology, or corresponding education. When selecting among qualified candidates, great importance will be attached to the prerequisites and interest of interdisciplinary collaboration, since a significant part of the research will be conducted in collaboration with other researchers from different subjects within the research environment. Extra merit is given to previous experience in areas relating to spectroscopy, optics, microfluidics, geology, and/or the manufacture and use of microsystems. You should be focused, structured and able to work efficiently by yourself and with others. Good communication skills in English, both spoken and written, are required.

Instructions for application:

Your application must contain:

- An introductory letter describing you, your understanding of the task, and motivating why you are appropriate for this position. (Max 3 pages)

- CV (max 2 pages)

- Copies of your course grades and other relevant credits

- Names and contact details (address, e-mail address and telephone number) of at least two reference persons.

The application can be written in English or Swedish, while the introductory letter must be written in English.

PhD studies usually span four years. However, the employment can be extended to up to five years if additional work at the department is performed. Pay according to the local PhD student agreement is applied.

Uppsala University values an even gender distribution and diversity. We therefore appreciate applicants with different background, functionality and life experience.
