Uppsala universitet, Institutionen för geovetenskaper

The Department of Earth Sciences is one of the most complete such academic departments in Europe. Our research focuses on subjects that range from the Earth’s core to the atmosphere, on scales from submicroscopic structures in minerals to the formation of mountains and oceans. We have teaching at undergraduate and graduate levels. Our courses offer a wide range within the geoscience area and several of the department's programs have received the highest rating in evaluations by the Swedish National Agency for Higher Education (Högskoleverket) and the Swedish Higher Education Authority (Universitetskanslersämbetet). Researcher position in Earth sciences with a focus on numerical modelling of magma dynamics in Volcanic and Igneous Plumbing Systems

We are seeking a highly motivated and enthusiastic candidate to join the Department of Earth Sciences to work on understanding magma dynamics in shallow crustal intrusions through numerical modelling.

Background:
The emplacement of magma into volcanoes generally precedes volcanic eruptions and causes volcanic unrest that can be monitored. However, the dynamics of magma flow into the volcanic plumbing system is poorly understood despite its implications for interpreting unrest and estimating volcanic risk. Generally, our understanding of how magma is emplaced is based on for example field studies of eroded intrusions, analogue experiments, and numerical models. Each of these methods contributes insights into the dynamics of intrusion processes.

Duties:
The successful candidate will further develop and run advanced computational models using the system COMSOL Multiphysics on viscous magma dynamics in volcanic and igneous plumbing systems. These models should be compared to, and integrated with, results from ongoing research at the department employing field mapping, 3D structural modelling, and analogue experiments. Overall, the project aims to better understand magma dynamics, associated volcanic unrest and volcanic risk. Teaching, up to 5% of working time, at M.Sc. level in a course on tectonics and geodynamics is included in working tasks.

Requirements:
PhD or equivalent degree in the Earth sciences or a related relevant subject. Candidates are required to have a background in numerical modelling of fluid dynamics and/or fluid-solid interaction with an application to magmatic systems and experience with the system COMSOL Multiphysics. Moreover, understanding for and knowledge of geological systems is required. Candidates are expected to have excellent research, communication, and publication skills. The willingness to work independently, to integrate into an international team, and to work beyond disciplinary boundaries is required. Experience of teaching at a basic level.

Additional qualifications:
An interest in public dissemination of scientific results is beneficial.

Application:
The application should include a CV, certified copies of diplomas and certificates, and a personal letter describing yourself, your relevant experience, research interests, and your motivation to apply for the position (maximum 1 page). The application should also contain a list of your publications.
