Uppsala University, The Department of Earth Sciences

The Department of Earth Sciences of Uppsala University is one of the most complete such academic departments in Europe. Our research focuses on subjects that range from the Earth’s core to the atmosphere, on scales from submicroscopic structures in minerals to the formation of mountains and oceans. We have teaching at undergraduate and graduate levels. Our courses offer a wide range within the geoscience area and several of the department's programs have received the highest rating in evaluations by the Swedish National Agency for Higher Education (Högskoleverket) and the Swedish Higher Education Authority (Universitetskanslersämbetet). For more information about the department, please visit: www.geo.uu.se. You will also find us at www.facebook.com/geouppsalauniversity.

The Programme for Air, Water, and Landscape Science (LUVAL) encompasses education and research in meteorology, hydrology, environmental analysis, and physical geography. The research in meteorology focuses on the physical processes in the Atmospheric Boundary Layer, as well as large-scale atmospheric dynamics. Research is geared towards basic process understanding in the boundary layer over sea, ice and land, but also addresses extreme weather events, wind energy and dispersion modelling. Within the program is also research focusing natural disasters, glaciology and modelling processes in the climate system. Teaching responsibilities are primarily within the Bachelor and Master Programmes in meteorology (Bachelor and Master Programmes in physics with the specialization on meteorology) but includes also several courses also at Aquatic and Environmental Engineering. More information on the programme for air-water and landscape science can be found at www.geo.uu.se/research/luval/.

Duties:
The postdoc will work within the frame of the project: “Large-Scale Organisation of Extreme Weather over Europe and North America” which aims to characterise the large-scale drivers and improve the prediction of mid-latitude weather extremes by combining the study of atmospheric dynamics with a statistical/mathematical approach. The exact focus of the research is flexible, providing a unique opportunity for the candidate to develop his/her own original ideas. Possible topics may include – but are not limited to – the identification of recurring planetary wave-breaking patterns linked to regional extremes, the use of dynamical systems theory to characterise the predictability of instantaneous atmospheric states, the use of idealised models to study the co-occurrence of geographically remote extreme weather events. The postdoc will also have the opportunity to engage in teaching/supervising duties, up to a maximum of 20% of his/her time.

Requirements:
A doctoral degree in Physics, Mathematics, Meteorology, Climate Science or similar disciplines with experience of atmospheric/climate studies is required. The applicant must be proficient in spoken and written English.

To qualify for a post-doctoral position, you must have a Ph.D. or a corresponding degree. The applicant's Ph.D. degree must have been obtained less than 3 years before the application date. However, periods such as sick leave or parental leave can be added to the 3-year period.

Additional qualifications:
Experience with statistical analysis and atmospheric dynamics, as well as appropriate computing and coding skills are a merit. The ranking of the candidates will also accord weight to evidence of independent thinking and ability to interact effectively in a multi-disciplinary research environment. Experience in private sector employment in fields relevant to the position will also be positively evaluated.

Uppsala University strives to be an inclusive workplace that promotes equal opportunities and attracts qualified candidates who can contribute to the University’s excellence and diversity. We welcome applications from all sections of the community and from people of all backgrounds.
