The Hugo Valentin Centre (HVC) is an interdisciplinary unit at the Department of History, Uppsala University, with a focus on research and education in two particular fields: first, cultural, social and political phenomena and processes of change related to the ethnic dimension of human life and, second, holocaust and genocide studies. The former involves studying minorities and ethnic relations in a broad sense, with an emphasis on migration, language and cultural revitalization, integration, discrimination, and political and social conditions in a multicultural context. Research is conducted in a markedly interdisciplinary research environment that brings together researchers with a background in history and philosophy, language studies and social sciences. This announcement concerns a position in the humanities and social sciences.

Uppsala University hereby announces as vacant the following two-year position as Postdoctoral Research Fellow specializing in the study of national minorities.

Work duties: A postdoctoral fellow’s duties consist mainly of research, but also some administration and the task of applying for external research funding in the field concerned. The position requires continuous attendance at the Centre, active participation in seminars, on-going presentation of the fellow’s own research and, where necessary, some teaching and supervision of students corresponding to up to 20 % of the position.

Eligibility requirements: To be eligible for a postdoctoral fellowship, the applicant must have a PhD or have attained corresponding academic subject proficiency in the humanities or social sciences, shown teaching skill; and have the personal characteristics required to meet the demands of the position well. A person with a PhD obtained not more than three years before the end of the application period is particularly eligible for the position.

Assessment criteria: Particular weight is given to the applicant’s prospects of contributing to research in the field but teaching skills and administrative proficiency will also be considered. A five-page description of the research that the applicant intends to carry out at HVC must be enclosed with the application. It should contain a clear and theoretically grounded research aim, an account of how the project contributes to the international state of the art in the field; a discussion regarding method; and a clear time schedule for project implementation. How the planned project is connected with current research at the Centre and/or contributes to the renewal of its activities, and how the applicant intends to present the results, should also be clearly stated. The application should also include a list over the applicant’s up to five most important publications (including the doctorate dissertation). The five publications should be uploaded to the online application system in order for them to be taken into account in the evaluation process. Documented ability in terms of inter-disciplinary research perspectives and cooperation is a merit.

Academic proficiency will be assessed primarily in terms of quality of scholarship. Other significant criteria are the applicant’s ability to independently plan, initiate, lead and develop research; capacity to obtain funds for research; and demonstrated skill of interacting both with colleagues in the discipline and with the community at large.

Other skills: Administrative proficiency is important for the position and will be given weight. This skill is demonstrated by, for example, an ability to plan, organize and prioritize work in a way that is efficient and fit for purpose. It is also shown by a capacity to define and adhere to time frames. Proficiency includes overall work planning, an ability to initiate and run networks and to organize conferences, and skill in managing resources in a manner that benefits activities. Applicants are required to be proficient in English, with skill in expressing themselves in speech and writing.

Application procedure: A complete application, including publications cited, must include:

• A curriculum vitae and attested copies of certificates and other documents referred to.
• A brief account of academic, teaching and other work. Personal circumstances (such as parental leave) that can, in assessment of qualifications, be credited to the applicant should be included in the account of qualifications and experience.
• A list of up to five academic works cited in the application. These should be ranked according to their relevance to the application. It must also be clearly stated which writings belong to the following categories: monographs, peer-reviewed articles and book chapters.
• Publications cited must be uploaded to the application system in pdf format (unpublished but completed PhD dissertations will also be assessed).
• A five-page project description closely connected with the state of the art in the research field.
