Research and teaching at the Department of linguistics and philology covers approx. twenty different languages and linguistic subjects as well as computational linguistics. These include many of the important languages and cultures in the Middle East, to which can be added Hindi, Swahili, Chinese, Ancient Greek and Latin. Comparative Indo-European linguistics and general linguistics are also part of the department.

Doctoral studies extend over a 4-year period during which the PhD-student will receive a salary as an employee of the department. Doctoral students are expected to engage in full-time study and research, and contribute to and participate in the department’s activities. Teaching and/or administrative tasks may be involved up to a maximum of 20 %, and the employment period is then extended proportionally.

Project description: Thesis projects should be in the field of computational linguistics and we welcome projects that are related to ongoing research in the computational linguistics research group. Current research areas include modeling of morphology, syntax and discourse phenomena, often from a cross-linguistic perspective, and digital philology, especially analysis of historical and literary texts, and texts produced by students and language learners. Requirements: To be eligible, candidates must have a master’s degree in computational linguistics/language technology or a degree in linguistics or computer science that provides a good foundation for PhD studies in computational linguistics.

Application: Applications should include a brief description of research interests and relevant experience, and a plan for the thesis project of at most three pages.
