Uppsala University, Department of Engineering Sciences

Postdoctoral Position in Urban Building Energy Modeling of Future Cities at the Department of Engineering Sciences, Ångström Laboratory.

Project description: In this project a beyond-state-of-the-art model for the energy performance of buildings in whole cities, a so-called Urban Building Energy Model (UBEM), will be developed. The project is performed in the Built Environment Energy Systems Group (BEESG), led by Associate Professor Joakim Widén. As the project builds on our existing and currently developed models, the postdoctoral researcher will work closely together with other members of our research team as well as with our international collaborators. The postdoctoral project is also part of a larger research project within the newly initiated Viable Cities programme, financed by the Swedish Energy Agency, and includes several academic and industrial partners.

Work duties: Development of an UBEM that includes models of buildings and their internal energy balances, their heat losses and the thermal flows within the city, to simulate indoor and outdoor environment on the urban scale. Connection of the model to advanced spatio-temporal models of city inhabitants’ activity and mobility patterns as well as meteorological sensor network data. Development and simulation of scenarios for urban development and integration of new energy technologies, and their impact on the energy balance in cities. The main duty involved in a post-doctoral position is to conduct research. Teaching may also be included, but up to no more than 20 % of working hours.

Qualifications: To qualify for an employment on a post-doctoral position the applicant must hold a PhD degree or a foreign degree equivalent to a PhD degree. The PhD degree must have been obtained no more than three years prior to the application deadline. The three year period can be extended on circumstances such as sick leave, parental leave, duties in trade unions, etc.

The applicant should have a PhD degree in the field of building energy modelling, building physics, or a related field. Experience specifically of urban building energy modelling is meriting. The applicant must be able to work both independently and in a team. Excellent oral and written proficiency in English is a requirement. Our research group consists of young and highly productive researchers, and we look for kindred candidates truly devoted to their field of research.

Application procedure: The application must include a personal letter, CV, a short description of your research interests, a list of publications, a digital copy of your PhD thesis, copies of diplomas and transcripts, and letters of recommendation and/or contact details to 2-3 references. Personal circumstances that may be of relevance in the evaluation, for example periods of parental leave, should be mentioned in the CV.

Uppsala University strives to be an inclusive workplace that promotes equal opportunities and attracts qualified candidates who can contribute to the University’s excellence and diversity. We welcome applications from all sections of the community and from people of all backgrounds.
