Uppsala University, Department of Engineering Sciences

Postdoctoral position – Fabrication of microfluidic systems for electroporation at the Division of Microsystems Technology, Department of Engineering Sciences, Ångström Laboratory.

Research group: In the EMBLA research group, led by Dr. Maria Tenje, we develop novel approaches in microfabrication and integrate our systems with microfluidics to develop new experimental platforms for visualisation and characterisation of cells. EMBLA is part of the Division of Microsystems Technology (MST), Department of Engineering Sciences and is located at the Ångström Laboratory. More information on the research group's profile is available on the website: www.teknik.uu.se/mikrosystemteknik/embla.

Research project: This is a collaborative research project with the Department of Cell and Molecular Biology at Uppsala University with the aim to develop a microfluidic platform for controlled electroporation of prokaryotic cells.

Duties: We are now strengthening our research team in the field of fabrication of microfluidic systems and we are looking for a highly motivated individual to join a team of researchers in carrying out top level microsystem research. The successful candidate will contribute to and lead research in the fabrication of microfluidic systems with integrated electrodes for electroporation applications. The systems will be used in systems biology to study the basic physical principles behind gene regulation in bacteria. Main responsibilities are to carry out and communicate top level scientific research, joint-supervision of Masters and PhD students and coordination with external research collaborators.

Qualifications: To qualify for an employment on a post-doctoral position the applicant must hold a PhD degree or a foreign degree equivalent to a PhD degree. The PhD degree must have been obtained no more than three years prior to the application deadline. The three year period can be extended on circumstances such as sick leave, parental leave, duties in trade unions, etc.

The candidate must have a PhD degree or equivalent in engineering physics, applied physics, materials science or similar disciplines and a large part of your PhD project should have been focused on development of advanced microsystems. The candidate should have a strong background in fabrication of microfluidic systems with special expertise in electrical characterization techniques used for microsystems. Experience with e-beam lithography is highly meriting. Experience in setting up microfluidic characterisation platforms and chip-to-world interfaces are desirable. Excellent knowledge of written and spoken English is required for the position. Good organisational, pedagogical and interpersonal skills are also essential for this role as there will be a substantial amount of collaboration with researchers in other disciplines.

How to apply:
Your application should include the following:
1) A letter describing yourself, your research interests and why you are a suitable person for the research project described.
2) CV (max. 2 pages)
3) A copy of your PhD diploma and complete list of course grades
4) Name and contact details (address, email address and phone number) to at least two references
5) A list of relevant publications

The application should be written in English.
