Uppsala University, Department of Law

The subject specialisation must be one of the Faculty of Law’s research education subjects: jurisprudence, private law, European law, fiscal law, public international law, business law, administrative law, private international law, constitutional law, medical law, environmental law, public law, civil and criminal procedural law, legal history or criminal law.

The position as Associate Senior Lecturer is announced in cooperation between the Department of Law and the Ragnar Söderberg Foundation.

Appointment date: By agreement.

Period of employment: The position of Associate Senior Lecturer may be held for a maximum of four years, with the opportunity of promotion to Senior Lecturer

Work duties: The position includes research, teaching, examination and administration. Responsibilities  for and administration of courses as well as supervising students, also count as teaching.

Research and teaching must be conducted mainly in the subject to which the appointment will relate.

The proportion of research must amount to at least 60 per cent.

The purpose of the Associate Senior Lecturer position is to qualify the holder for employment as a university teacher, which is subject to higher eligibility requirements.

Eligibility requirements: To be eligible for employment as an Associate Senior Lecturer, the applicant must have a PhD or have attained a corresponding level of research proficiency in one of the Faculty of Law’s research education subjects (see above); demonstrated teaching expertise; and possess the personal characteristics required to meet the demands of the position well. An applicant who has obtained a doctorate or acquired corresponding proficiency no more than five years before the end of the application period is particularly eligible for the position.

The applicant should have completed five weeks’ teacher training for higher education that is relevant for the work, or be judged to have corresponding knowledge. The academic teacher training may be implemented during the appointee’s first two years of employment, if there are special reasons.

For eligibility, the ability to teach in Swedish and English is required. A person who, at the beginning of the appointment, is proficient in only one of these languages must be able to teach in the other as well within two years at the most.

Assessment criteria: In selection among eligible applicants, particular weight will be given to research expertise. With reference to the nature of the position as one that confers qualifications, the applicants’ research and teaching qualifications will be assessed primarily in terms of quality. Thus, a quantitative advantage possessed by an applicant that may be explained by the person having worked for a longer period will not be a decisive factor.

Research expertise: This relates to research qualifications. In assessment of research expertise, scholarly quality will be the primary consideration. The scope of the research, especially in terms of its width and depth, is also regarded as important. A research plan not exceeding 10 pages in length, outlining the applicant’s planned research during the four-year period in question, must be attached to the application.

Teaching expertise: Just as careful attention will be paid to reviewing teaching expertise as research expertise. In the assessment of teaching expertise, teaching quality will be the primary consideration. The scope of the applicant’s experience, in terms of both width and depth, is also considered important. Teaching expertise must be well documented to enable quality to be assessed.

Other expertise: Importance will be assigned to administrative and management expertise. This kind of expertise is demonstrated in, for example, a capacity for operational planning and an ability to work well with others.

In addition, particular weight will be attached to the applicant’s prospects of contributing to future development of both research and teaching.

Interviews, test lectures and obtaining references may be used in the recruitment.

Personal circumstances (such as parental leave) that may be credited to the applicant in the valuation of qualifications for the post should be specified in connection with the applicant’s account of qualifications and experience.

Uppsala University values the qualities that equal gender distribution and diversity bring to its activities. We would therefore like to see applicants of all genders and with varied birth background, functional capacity and life experiences.

Promotion to Senior Lecturer: When the position as Associate Senior Lecturer comes to an end, the applicant is entitled to a review for employment as Senior Lecturer. One fundamental requirement is that the applicant must then meet the requirements applying to lecturer appointments according to the University’s Appointment Regulations and the Faculty of Law’s guidelines on teacher recruitment. In addition, the applicant must demonstrate progression in both research and teaching during his or her tenure. The review will be based partly on the research plan submitted and the applicant’s ability to show that the research conducted in accordance with this plan meets consistently high international quality standards.

Application procedure: A full application must be submitted through Uppsala University’s Varbi recruitment system and registered in the digital application system of the Ragnar Söderberg Foundation. The application must include the following:

  • Brief summary of the applicant’s research, teaching and other activities (CV)
  • Account of research qualifications
  • List of publications
  • Account of teaching qualifications
  • Account of other qualifications
  • Research and teaching works cited
  • Self-reflecting account of future research and the applicant’s teaching and other qualifications
  • Research plan not exceeding 10 pages in length
  • Certificates, testimonials and other relevant documents
