Uppsala University, Department of Philosophy

The Department of Philosophy carries out research and education within a broad spectrum of practical philosophy, theoretical philosophy and aesthetics. The Department currently employs about 40 lecturers, researchers and doctoral students. Degree courses and modules are offered at undergraduate, postgraduate and PhD levels. More information on the Department and its activities can be found at www.filosofi.uu.se. Currently seeking to expand its work in teaching and research within aesthetics, the department is therefore seeking an Assistant Lecturer (Biträdande Lektor) in Aesthetics.

Period of employment: An appointment as Assistant Lecturer can be held for a maximum of four years, with the possibility of being assessed for promotion to Senior Lecturer (Universitetslektor).

Job description: Research, teaching and examination within philosophical aesthetics. Teaching duties include taking overall responsibility for a number of course modules, individual supervision and course administration. The appointment can also include general administrative duties. The proportion of teaching is prescribed at maximum 50% of working time. The appointment as Assistant Lecturer is intended to offer opportunities for professional growth and preparation for promotion to Senior Lecturer status, for which the employment criteria are more comprehensive. The subjects taught relate for the most part to the literature of analytic philosophical aesthetics. Additional duties will include the building of working relations and connections with colleagues in both practical and theoretical philosophy and in other departments within the faculty.

If the applicant currently has external research funding at the time of appointment, those funds will be used toward the research proportion of the Assistant Lectureship.

Eligibility: To be qualified for appointment as Assistant Lecturer one needs to have obtained a doctoral degree or achieved the equivalent competence. Applicants who have obtained a doctoral degree or achieved the equivalent competence within five or fewer years prior to the end of the application period will be prioritized. The applicant will be expected to complete the pedagogical training relevant to university teaching, taken over a period of five weeks, or to be judged as having equivalent competence.

According to Uppsala University’s appointment regulations, eligible applicants for lecturer positions must possess the professional and personal qualities requisite to the performance of teaching duties to a high standard.

The ability to teach in both English and Swedish is a requirement. Candidates who at the time of appointment are able to teach in only one of those languages will be expected within two years to be able to teach in the other.

Assessment: When assessing the eligible applicants’ merits, the highest weight will be accorded to research expertise. In line with the aim to prepare the Assistant Lecturer for a Senior Lecturer position, for which there are more demanding criteria, the assessment of research and teaching expertise will primarily be made on the basis of quality. An applicant who has an advantage in terms of numbers of publications which can be explained by the number of years the person has been active as a researcher will not in itself be decisive for who will be considered the more qualified candidate.

In line with the Department's aim of increased internationalization, we welcome candidates with established international networks and international publication profiles.

In keeping with the character and subject matter of the envisaged teaching duties, particular weight will be placed on a candidate’s experience and ability in employing the methods and questions of analytic philosophical aesthetics.

Research expertise: In assessing research expertise, quality will be the prime consideration. The scope of research, primarily in regard to depth and breadth, will also be given consideration.

Teaching expertise: The assessment of teaching expertise will be given equal weight to research expertise. Teaching expertise comprises educational and teaching qualifications and should be well documented so that the quality can be assessed. In assessing teaching expertise, teaching quality will be the prime consideration. The scope of teaching experience, in terms of both breadth and depth, will also be given consideration.

Assessment of other skills: Administrative and management skills are important for this position. Administrative expertise is demonstrated, for example, by the capacity to plan, organize, and prioritize work in an efficient and purposeful manner as well as the ability to assign and respect deadlines. Furthermore, consideration will be given to the ability to interact with others both within academia and in the wider community.

Special weight will also be assigned to the applicant’s ability to contribute to the development of the department and the discipline, both regarding research and education.

All qualifications, skills and experience referred to in the application should be supported with the relevant documentation to allow assessment of both quality and scope.

Please note that applicants are supposed to include up to five publications with their application. These are uploaded under item 11 on the electronic form.

When Uppsala University appoints new teachers, the applicants selected are those who, following a qualitative total assessment of expertise and merits, are judged to have the best potential to carry out and develop the relevant duties and contribute to a positive development of the department.

The Recruitment Committee may in this recruitment come to use interviews, trial-lectures and references. The applicant should therefore submit a list of referees with insight into the applicant’s professional skill as well as personal qualities that may be of relevance for the position, e.g. ability to cooperate, ability to lead and working methods.

Personal circumstances (such as full or part-time parental leave, trade union appointments, military service, or other) that may benefit the applicants in the assessment of qualifications should be included in the list of qualifications and experience (Curriculum Vitae).
