Uppsala University, Department of Ecology and Genetics

SciLifeLab (www.scilifelab.se) is a Swedish national center for molecular biosciences with focus on health and environmental research. The center combines frontline technical expertise with advanced knowledge of translational medicine and molecular bioscience. SciLifeLab is hosted by four Swedish universities (Karolinska Institutet, KTH Royal Institute of Technology, Stockholm University and Uppsala University) and collaborates with several other universities. Now SciLifeLab invites applications for Postdoc positions in the groups of our SciLifeLab Faculty.

A position as a postdoctoral researcher in environmental genomics and microbiology is available at the Department of Ecology and Genetics, Uppsala University.

The Department of Ecology and Genetics is an international environment with staff and students from all over the world. Our research spans from evolutionary ecology and genetics to studies of ecosystems. For more information, see www.ieg.uu.se.

Project description: Microorganisms of the terrestrial deep biosphere represent roughly 19% of the total biomass on earth. However, not much is known about the ecology, metabolism, diversity or evolution of the bacteria, archaea and microeukaryotes making a living in these extreme environments. By extensive application of cultivation-independent molecular tools to study the biota inhabiting deep subsurface fractures in the granite bedrock at the Äspö Hard Rock Laboratory, we have now begun to uncover and map the diversity, metabolism and ecology of microbial lifeforms in the geogas-driven deep terrestrial biosphere. In this postdoctoral project, we will explore the diversity of microscopic eukaryotes (mainly fungi) in the deep terrestrial biosphere and study their metabolic traits and interactions with other microorganisms in the anoxic and nutrient depleted waters of this deep and hidden biome. The project will make use of and explore an extensive collection of metagenomes, metatranscriptomes and single cell genomes from different deep aquifers and biofilms, with bioinformatic analyses as a central project component. Some additional field work and laboratory analyses may also be included. The project is a collaboration between three research groups based at Uppsala University (Bertilsson and Rosling) and the Linnaeus University (Dopson).

Duties: Research about microbial interactions in the deep terrestrial biosphere. Bioinformatic and metabolic/functional analysis of fungal and bacterial communities in water and biofilms of the deep bedrock. Analysis and interpretation of data and presentation of results in scientific publications. Some limited student supervision may be included.

Qualifications required: For this position the candidate must hold a PhD degree within biology, bioinformaticsa molecular biotechnology or another relevant subject. Experience of large-scale sequence analysis is a requirement and should be documented in the application. Candidates must be highly proficient in spoken as well as written English.

To be eligible the candidate must have a PhD degree, or a foreign degree equivalent to this, completed less than three years before the application deadline. If there are special reasons, the degree can/could be completed earlier. Special reasons can for example include leave due to illness, parental leave, work within a union.

Qualifications desired: Research experience in microbial metabolism, microbial interactions and/or comparative genomics. Merits and experience in biostatistics and metagenome/metatrascriptome analyses.

Position: This is a fulltime temporary position for 24 months. Individual salaries applied.

Access: 15 September 2018 or as agreed upon.

Instructions for the application: The application should include Example: 1) a letter of intent describing yourself and your research interests an 2) a CV and list of publications 3) name and contact information for at least two reference persons. The application should be written in English.
