Uppsala University, Department of Immunology, Genetics and Pathology

The Department of Immunology, Genetics and Pathology at Uppsala University (www.igp.uu.se) has a broad research profile with strong research groups focused on cancer, autoimmune and genetic diseases. A fundamental idea at the department is to stimulate translational research and thereby closer interactions between medical research and health care. Research is presently conducted in the following areas: medical and clinical genetics, clinical immunology, pathology, neuro-oncology, vascular biology, radiation science and molecular tools. Department activities are also integrated with the units for Oncology, Clinical Genetics, Clinical Immunology, Clinical Pathology, and Hospital Physics at Akademiska sjukhuset, Uppsala. The department has teaching assignments in several education programmes, including Master Programmes, at the Faculty of Medicine, and in a number of educations at the Disciplinary Domain of Science and Technology. The department has a yearly turnover of around SEK 400 million, out of which more than half is made up of external funding. The staff amounts to approximately 340 employees, out of which 100 are PhD-students, and there are in total more than 600 affiliated people.

SciLifeLab (www.scilifelab.se) is a Swedish national center for molecular biosciences with focus on health and environmental research. The center combines frontline technical expertise with advanced knowledge of translational medicine and molecular bioscience. SciLifeLab is hosted by four Swedish universities (Karolinska Institutet, KTH Royal Institute of Technology, Stockholm University and Uppsala University) and collaborates with several other universities.

SciLifeLab invites applications for Postdoc positions in the groups of our SciLifeLab Faculty.

Work description:
We are seeking a motivated Postdoc for experimental laboratory work in a cross-disciplinary team focused on childhood brain tumor biology and studies of future treatment options for cancer recurrences. The duties involve: (1) Identifying novel cancer drugs that can sensitize brain tumor cells for standard irradiation treatment (2) Study the mechanism for recurrence in various in vivo models for malignant brain tumors. (3) Study novel targeted cancer treatments in combination with irradiation in vivo.

The project involves setting up drug screens to study efficacy of various substances. It also involves using advanced laboratory techniques including stem cell culturing, cell sorting, immunostainings, confocal microscopy, irradiation treatment, lentiviral production, gene cloning and editing, in vivo models, treatment studies and drug screening. The project aims at improving targeted therapies against childhood brain cancer. Finally, some of the work in the position involves administration and teaching at the department.

Qualifications:
PhD in biomedicine, pharmacy, medicine or similar. To be eligible to apply you must have a PhD completed within three years of the application deadline. If you received your PhD earlier but special circumstances exist, you are also eligible to apply. Documented experience of work with in vivo models (FELASA C certificate), drug screening and cell based assays. Documented experience in working in cross-disciplinary teams that bridge molecular biology or experimental research with translational/clinical research and bioinformatics.

Merits:
Experience of radiation therapy or high-throughput studies, e.g. drug screening. Experience from neuroscience or brain tumor research.

Application:
Your application should comprise a CV, copies of degrees and relevant study transcripts and grades, publications and a short description of your research interests. We request that you provide references and provide at least one letter of recommendation. The applications are assessed according to these criteria: qualifications as above, basic training, prior experience in related areas. Great emphasis is placed on personal suitability.
