Uppsala University, Department of Physics and Astronomy

Uppsala University hereby declares the following position to be open for application: PhD position in many-body quantum theory applied to condensed matter systems at the Department of Physics and Astronomy. Starting date: October 15, 2018. The PhD position is open for four years.

This position is funded through an ERC Starting Grant on the theory of engineered unconventional and high-temperature superconducting systems with controlled and optimizable properties, by using one-dimensional systems of electrons as building blocks. Depending on individual interest and aptitudes, the successful applicant will therefore work on a combination of topics. These will include the theory of 1D and 2D electron systems (such as e.g. nanoribbons, graphene, or the 2D Hubbard model of the cuprate superconductors), and techniques may be analytical ones like bosonization, mean-field and renormalization group techniques, and/or numerical approaches like the density matrix renormalization group (DMRG) and dynamical mean field theory (DMFT). More background on the project is available at http://materials-theory.physics.uu.se/kantian/

The successful applicant is expect to possess strong scientific curiosity, as well as an intrinsic desire to learn theories and techniques and ultimately developing novel ones themselves.

She/he will enter into a sustained collaboration with the project PI, who is committed to participate fully in this project, and other group members, as well as the PIs wider network of collaborators.

The applicant is expected to have a Masters degree in Physics, or equivalent, with a good background in theory in general, and especially in either condensed matter theory or numerical physics.

Application: The application file should include a statement of research interest, CV, certificates of exams, degrees and grades, a copy of the Master thesis, or equivalent, published articles and other relevant materials, if available, as well as contact information for at least two reference persons.

Rules governing Ph.D. candidates are set out in the Higher Education Ordinance Chapter 5, §§ 1-7 and in Uppsala university's rules and guidelines http://regler.uu.se/search/?hits=30&languageId=1&search-language_en=English

Uppsala University strives to be an inclusive workplace that promotes equal opportunities and attracts qualified candidates who can contribute to the University’s excellence and diversity. We welcome applications from all sections of the community and from people of all backgrounds.

Salary: According to local agreement for PhD students and teaching assistants.

Type of position: Full time position.
